Winchester Mod 70 - $75 or $45 for info on the rifle??

I picked up a used Mod 70 in .270 just last week at a LGS. They had no info on it so I got a hold of Winchester, who could only tell me it was made in 92', and to contact the Cody Museum for more info. I called them, Cody, and they said (in a recording) that for $75 they would do some research on it and send me a letter. I thought that was only for one of the older collectibles, but no, called Win again and they said it was for any rifle and that they could do it for $45. I was a little shocked, not gonna lie. Both Remington and Weatherby both looked up the SN I provided for one of their rifles and they told me the year of MFG, original configuration (barrel length, twist etc) and gave me a link to the manual. The rifle is in great shape, thought it would be no older than the 2000s, though the bolt seems to have some wear on the sides (jeweled), the bolt face looks good as does the bore.

For most firearms, you can fine the year of manufacture on the 'net.

Seems like I remember Colt charging for a letter too.
It told you the date a gun left the factory, what model & configuration it was, and where it was sent.

OK People. Enough of this idle chit-chat.

Try the Winchester Gallery 817 496 9391. Maybe they can tell you, maybe not. I've gotten manufacture dates for several older Winchesters from them in the past; maybe their books extend to Winchester's last US manufacture years.

Tried them just now, they have no affiliation with Winchester. No big deal, all I wanted to know was twist really, and I can figure that out. The other stuff like barrel length, type bolt etc., I can figure out too. I was just surprised that Winchester wasn't more organized.

A question for the group. Will a stock with bottom metal fit on a rifle with internal mag, if the barrel profile matches?

you may have to change the magazine , but yes you can make it work, as long as its a long action stock.
