I am pondering a re-barrel of a LA tang safety Ruger 77. It is from around 1978 and the barrel has pits on the outside, of all places, where it looks like someone got blood on it and never wiped it off. It is a 280 Rem and it lacks a LOT to be desired in the accuracy dept. I know that single point cut rifled barrels are noted for their accuracy and smooth interior but how does the barrel maker know when his cutter has reached the desired depth and rotates around to the next groove? There are a lot of barrel makers having really great success with button rifled barrels and I am not opposed to using one of those. This will probably be a 22/6MM with a duplicate taper to match the factory Ruger. Any barrel makers out there care to enlighten me(us)?
