    model 70 woe's

I have a win m70 that is giving me fits
I bought the rifle new as a super grade 30-06 and have had misfire's in that chamber
Well I always wanted a 35 Whelen so I shipped it off to Jess to have it rebored to 35 Whelen
    still getting misfire's
I searched the internet and find other people have had the same issue's as I am
I put in a heavier main spring and did not fix trouble
so I think I have a head space issue so I get gauges for headspace
no neither gauge will have the bolt close on them and my cartridges were getting hard to close as well
    not sure what to do
my firing pin has approximately .045 protrusion from bolt face
I think it always had a head space issue so what Jess did did not cause this

If the bolt will not close on a go gauge excess headspace can't be the problem unless the brass shoulder has been set back to far by the dies. Are you using reloads. Are you using the same brass necked up to 35 as you were using with the 30/06? Have you tried factory loads?

I'd try a few factory rounds, or neck sized re-loads, once fired from it.

that is what I am having trouble with is once fired neck sized cases
After talking with Jess we surmised that the firing pin extrusion was to short
he said it should be around .060 and I have .045 so that may be the misfire issues
and I may have a tight chamber so I need to size more
I ordered a new firing pin so we shall see

    .

Have you stripped the bolt and inspected/cleaned the FP tunnel inside for the presence of some crud or metal shaving that's keeping the FP from full travel ?

I agree that Firing pin Protrusion is most likely your problem.
.045 protrusion is way to short.
Take the bolt apart and clean it really good , then check the protrusion again before you order a new firing pin.
I had a Ruger 77 that had the same problems , and it was a 30-06.
I could not find a replacement since it was the Old Model with the Tang Safety.
So I just turned down the Stop Collar on the firing pin front end .015"
That allowed the firing pin to protrude the needed amount.

Oh yes I have taken the bolt apart cleaned it and cleaned it again
when it was a 30-06 I had misfires on factory ammo so when a local
gunsmith basically said it was handloading that was the problem I knew
I needed to go another direction
I have been handloading for many many years and do not buy factory ammo ever
unless like the 30-06 I do not as of yet have dies for that cal
not one of any other guns I own has had a factory round fired in it so to try to pin it on me is insulting
there had to be another explanation and I think we have found it
as far as the stop collar I have no way to precisely remove the material or I would
    thank you

I actually shaved down the front of the Stop Collar with my Poor Man's Lathe. ( Drill Motor and a File ).since I did not have my Lathe any more.
I left it in California when I moved to Arizona.

since i dont know history of gun , my bet is like my rem 700 the firing pin is controlled by inside of the bolt , i took a drill bit and ground it to same as the pin. found brass inside the bolt
cleaned it out and pin worked , i didnt remove steel , just brass , that got there some how. a brush wont work . its pressed tight

Change primers. I had "hangfire" issues with my 03-A3 using CCI200 and H414 ball powder. Firing pin would drop and there would a noticeable lag until ignition. Very inconvenient when you are shooting a highpower match and trying to get ten aimed shots off in 60 seconds. Tried several heavier springs but that just made the trigger pull worse and harder to cock. The primer hit was substantial. Finally switched to Federal 210s and all was right with the world. H414 is a ball powder and apparently a bit harder to ignite. primers probably would have been fine with a stick powder like Varget.

I agree the firing pin is most likely short. Industry standard is .048 to .062. You are on the short end of the deal, and the firing pin most likely isn't long enough to activate the anvil/primer. If it's not long enough, you are probably just crushing the priming compound a little bit, if even that. Without anvil contact, it most likely won't fire.
When checking chambering issues, remove the main spring and firing pin from the bolt. You want to feel just the very slightest resistance turning the bolt home. Head space should not be an issue for a handloader, as we tailor the load for the rifle.
I would recommend going back to the standard spring if the new firing pin proves to be long enough.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

I certainly meant no disparagement, and only opined a possible solution...

pietro I was certainly not referring to you I was indeed referring to the gunsmith I had talked to
its apparent he is not a handloader and does not have any idea what can be done

I just received the replacement firing pin and rite off the bat it is nothing
like what came with the gun originally.I thought I was doomed to have a nonfunctional
rifle, then it dawned on me that may be they installed the incorrect firing pin at the factory
during assembly. So I installed it with the correct pin and main spring measured the pin extrusion and
immediately I got .060 protrusion vs the .045 I had originally. It may be that I have solved this
riddle but have not as of yet test fired to confirm, but that will be forthcoming. You may ask yourself
why did he not send it back to the factory?Well I have had the original 30-06 rebored to 35 Whelen
so rather than send it back I took all the warranty on myself.

    that was definitely the problem
Winchester had the wrong firing pin in my rifle
a simple mistake but it cost me a deer this past fall season
