Beautiful stocks! I just redid a Marlin 336 30/30 in a similar fashion. It’s still doing final dry before I buff it out

320 grit wasn't what i needed, i needed 220 grit to take off the black linseed oil. i used 2/3 of a sheets of 220 grit. the black gunk left on the sandpaper was worthless. i then did a steel bristle on the sandpaper every few seconds. (sand for few seconds, then bristle the sandpaper, sand for a few seconds......) i got most of the black linseed oil off of the stock(5 hours) and then i started the 320 grit. then 400 grit AND then bartley wood dark filler. when that is done, then its back to the 400 grit. then i'll 4 ought steel wool it and THEN i'll do minwax antique oil. after 3 or 4 coats, then i'll let it sit for 3 or 4 weeks......and THEN it's 2 coats johnson's paste wax.

last week i had a bad head cold, but this week i started finishing my krag and rotten stone and 3 in 1 oil my 98 mauser stock. i'll get pictures pf the mauser stock when i am done.

my krag stock after 3 coats of minwax antique oil(sorry, pix are my laptop)

i know they don't look good, but you can see the depth of the grain. right now, she is drying on coat 4. i think that she should real good on coat 7 or 8. when that is done, rotten stone and 3 in 1 oil. then i'll use johnson's paste wax.
