    sorry about picture, gunstock werk

i tried a military stock and it came out all right. i did steam out all of the scratches and dents and i did use an oil paste coat filler.

if you want to strip a stock, try citristrip. i take the stock and slather it with citristrip and i put the stock down an the heel and fore-end(upside down for those of us who have to look it up!!!! ) on a sheet of aluminium foil. then places grocery bags(3 or 4) on top of stock. i wait 24+/- hours, then i wipe it off using paper towels and two or three squirts of mean green. repeat if necessary. i never have to do it a 3rd time.

    www.citristrip.com/

    https://www.rustoleum.com/product-ca...-multi-purpose

    to finish the stock:
    1. steam out the scratches
    2. 400 grit sand paper over the entire stock
    3. 4 ought steel wool over the entire stock
    4. wipe it down with tack cloth
    5. min-wax antique oil(3 - 7 coats, depends on your taste) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdAh...VideosJoeWRhea
    6. (optional) pumice stone over the entire stock
    7. (optional) rotten stone over the entire stock

    http://castboolits.gunloads.com/images/attach/jpg.gif

    sorry about the picture
this is a 93 spanish mauser stock(1924 i think). its now on step 5 and i'm waiting for it to dry(final 4th coat). i'm on the fence to do step 6 and 7. i did a dark walnut oil paste coat to fill up some of the scratches (2 coats). (to use in between step 2 and step 3)

all in all, instead of throwing the military gun stock away and making/buying a new one, use it. you'll be satisfied it did, i am.

You have an even color, that alone can be difficult to achieve. Better to preserve an old original than buy new, just my thoughts.

That Spanish stock looks good, raw honey color almost, I like it a lot. Last stock I finished I used Teak Oil because I had a gallon of it I had used on wooden boat transom ladder, it gave a nice finish.

    thanks!!!!!!

when i was using lin speed oil(i have to do rotten stone after its done drying, 1 month), the drying time between each coat was abysmal(i had to look it up). it went from 24 hours to 2 weeks between the coats. then you have to wait for a month or longer till its finally dry(12th coat). then you go to the rotten stone route. i have 6 or 7 months(including sanding) in it already(its beautiful) but there's got to be a better way. i don't like the true oil finish, they did something to finish, whether they did swap on the chemicals or cost of chemicals went way down. i don't know.

i like the way that linseed oil works, but the time involved isn't fer me. i looked at everything and i couldn't find anything that werks for me. then i found mini wax antique oil. i looked it up on youtube and i found everything that werks fer me. i choose to do the 93 mauser for my "experiment". if i messed up, theres always richards gun stocks anyway. anyways, i steamed the dents and scratches as best as i can. i sanded it and put on/off paste oil. wipe the gun stock down and began my coats of antique oil(4 coats, i should have stopped at 3). i'm still on the fence about rotten stone sanding, but i feel good about the stock turned out.

i have another 93 mauser stock that richard's turned out(Apache gold) that is going to my youngest son's. in about 2 or 3 weeks, i'll start sanding it and the finish will be antique oil.

i spent about 9 or 10 hours rotting stone polishing it. then i used two coats of Johnson's paste wax. i put it back together and into the safe it goes. i'll do a 257 roberts barrel and the bolt will need bent, dayton trigger kit, 2 position safety and d&t for a scope mount. but i have 3 or 4 rifles to do.

tomorrow or the next day, its rotten stone and 3 in 1 oil in a 98 mauser stock. i mix the rotten stone power and 3 in 1 oil up in a paste(small amount) and i do the stock in pieces. i'll do it in 3 - 4 hours, each day till the stock is smooth as a baby's bottom.

and then my wood werking skills(little to next to none) are going to a 93 mauser Apache gold stock.

then its either a 1898 spr armory (2 actions & 2 rifles) or a 95 Chilean navy mauser(action) or 91 sporterized argentine mauser or a sporterized 6.5 carcano.

well, i got to my 98 mauser.......again. i used citristrip because i didn't use bartley oil filler (dark). when i was rotten stoning the stock, i seen "dents" in the stock because i didn't use filler. the rotten stoning takes the high spots off, but low spots("dents") it was just too much.

so i'll citristrip it and do an oil filler with mineral spirits to fill the grain. when thats done, i'm going use minwax antique oil finish instead of linspeed oil (i don't the like the time the linspeed requires).

oh well, you live, you learn.

i got the 98 mauser stock just about done. it will take several weeks to cure it but it still needs rotten stone. bartley's dark oil filler was used. bartley's was on my dad's shelf, so he told me i could use it. the last time he had done a gunstock was 1979-80. i thought that 40 some years of bartley sitting there on the shelf would NOT be good. but as soon as i pried the lid off, it was still good. anyway heres the pictures(pix are not good) i used minwax antique oil on it. i find that it is much better than lin speed oil. the grain of the wood "pops" out at you.

Congrats, I've got a stock that needs attention and have no clue what would be the best way to go about it. I need to see if it shoots fairly well before working on the stock. Still waiting on parts and doing research on this old 1939 Mossberg model 51. It's a 22 and I'll have more in it than I can get out but I'm passing it on to my soon to be 2 year old grandson.

Keep up the good work and post pics when you can.
