    Source casting ready lead

Is there a forum recommended source for cast ready lead. Would be willing to buy quality lead for casting "match" bullets and use my other lead for practice bullet casting. Casting 38 spl revolver loads in the 950 fps.

Rotometals.com - they have a section for bullet-casting and they sponsor the forum, too.

I was just offered a couple hundred pounds of used wheel weights.

Are wheel weights a decent bullet alloy?

Any tricks to determine lead vs zink wheel weights? I noticed that the zink are coated and don't scratch easily...any other methods?

    Thanks

EDIT: Just located the sticky above discussing identifying wheel weights...

WW now days can be just about anything. If you want repeatable alloy, then buying it from roto is the way to go but it is not cheap. Clip ww alloy is useful for most handgun applications but you really wont have consistency unless you have a few 100# to melt & blend. Though imo, exact alloy doesn't really matter much, especially in light target loads.

I buy from Rotometals but I just ordered lead wheel weights from a vendor on EBay. Just go there and search for Scrap Lead. Lots of linotype and pure Pb. I'll let you all know how the wheel weights turn out.

Wheel weights arrived today. I got 10 lbs to try. Set up the propane burner and melted them down. Pretty dirty like you'd get from a tire shop. All were lead based. I dumped them all into an 8" cast iron skillet to melt. Used a magnet to remove clips from the melt. Should have done it in two batches. The full skillet was verrry heavy. Skimmed the dross and poured into a Lee ingot mould. From the 10# it looks like I got about 7-8 lbs of alloy. I am estimating because the ingot mould has large ingots on the ends which I take to be about a pound apiece. The smaller ones in the middle are marked 1/2 lb. After they cool I will try weighing to see how accurate my guess was. All in all I am pleased. Got a lead on some more here locally a couple days ago. If I can get them for fifty cents a pound I will be happy.

After cooling I weighed the ingots. Total weight is 8.7 lbs. I'm happy.
