I have some Alliant Varmint powder and want to load some 223 rem 55 gr fmj's but can only find a load for 55 gr v max which is 24.7 gr, Would that load be okay to use in the fmj's? I would appreciate a start and max load if anybody has one.

The Alliant site is showing their max charge. You can find some online load data for Varmint at the Nosler and Speer websites. Nothing specifically for FMJ but will give you an idea or likely ranges, which have higher maxes. Most of the bullet mfgs group identical lead jacket bullet weights together for their data.

My standard load in my AR is 25 grains of Varmint and whatever 55 grain fmj I get a good buy on, CCI small rifle primers, loaded in my mixed-military brass. Mild load (around 2800 fps) that has been 100% reliable. I must have got it off the Alliant web site when I started out and have not played with any other loads.
That is a 223 Remington load held to SAAMI 223 Remington MAP. It is indeed a "mild" load for a 5.56 STANAG load.
