What is the proper diameter for a core to swage a projectile? Can it be large enough to just fit in the die?

A lead bullet has to fit in the die. If it is severely undersized it will just have more wrinkles in it when finished.
That will work fine. My .452 Corbin (Dave) die set uses a .380 core as that is the size that will fit in a copper tubing jacket. No problem with using it in a standard jacket, the lead will swell to fit the available space.
At one time I was gifted a box of .430 SWC that I had no gun to shoot in, a quick trip through the swaging core seat die with a SWC nose punch turned them into .452SWC, lube grooves and lube stayed intact and the boolits shot just fine in my firearm.
If you visit corbin web site they have several pages you can read for free. All of his wire sizes fit to the nearest case I.D.
