    Question Poly coated bullets

Why don't poly coated bullets need wax lubrications ? I've shot full power loads out of my 44 magnum, other than they smell odd, they shot as well as gas check bullets ,so will gas checks be a thing of the past ?

When I try 150gr powder coated non-gaschecked bullets in my 30-30 at 2250fps, I'll let you know.

You can push a lubed boolit only 'so fast' before ya start having issues.
With a gas check, you can push it a bit faster.

A PC coated boolit, you can push faster than lubed,
getting it up & around lubed & GC speed.

A GC on a PC boolit can be pumped up faster than that before issues start..

I've heard coatings described as having a function like a copper jacket. Whether they grip the rifling like copper or brass I don't know, but apparently they're durable enough to keep the lead from contacting the bore.

My understanding is that any burning plastic smell implies incomplete curing of the coating, which may lead to failure to prevent leading and/or hard to remove coating deposits in the barrel.

IMO, they do grip rifling better, at least poly rifling. Lubed bullets shot just ok in my G20/10mm with full power loads. When I went to coated, accuracy was almost 100% better & no leading issues.
As to making gc obsolete, imo, yes in handguns. I have had them removed from several of my molds. Mostly a cost issue, they are not cheap anymore. FWIW, the smell can also be powder driven. TG burns super hot & I can smell it on the range when others are shooting coated.

I powder coat all my cast bullets now.
And those that I plan on pushing fast,, still get a GC.

To answer that OP as to WHY,, it was explained that the poly coatings of PCing,, seals the bullet in a similar fashion as plating or even light jackets. So a wax isn't necessary for sealing.
I have pulled many coated bullets out of my berms,, and they can look as good as they did before loading & shooting where the coating is concerned.
