AA#9 What do you use for

I load for Shuetzen style shooting and bought 2lbs of AA#9 as recommended for use in my 32-20 CPA round. I found the stuff to be quite "peaky" I can get a load that is accurate but still detect yawing at 200yds. when I up the charge I get really ugly looking primers and some cases are hard to extract. So I would be interested in hearing of loads in other cartridges that maintain accuracy out to 200 yds. I shoot fixed ammo in our cast bullet miltary and commercial matches also.

I don't know about 200 yards. I use WC820 which I understand to be military equivalent of AA9. I shoot it in 357, 44 Mag 45 Blackhawk, 30-30 and 7/30 Waters. I use cast exclusively, a heavy crimp and heavy for caliber bullets, ie 175+ 357. 250+ 44, 250 + 45, 150 7mm and 165+ 30. There is plenty of book data out there for the pistol cartridges. I saw the 30-30 load in a national magazine of 15.5 gr and a 170 gr cast bullet. I remember using it as well in the 7 tcu after one of Junior1942's post with it.

I use it in .44 mag and .357. I also don't know about 200 yards, but dad used it when he was shooting .44 IHMSA and found it quite satisfactory. It burns cleanly and is supposedly low flash, for what it's worth.

i use aa9/820 for 44 special kieth level loads. Full power 41 mag 44 mag and large frame 45 ruger colt loads, Ive used it in 454s 475s and 500 linebaughs. Ive used it in 50 beo and 300 blackout ar loads. Just use it at full power levels. it doesnt take to downloading well. 2400 is better at that. But if i could only have one slow burning pistol powder id choose it hands down over anything else. I havent found it peaky at all. No more then any ball pistol powder and less so then most. If your bullets are not stable at 200 yards you either dont have enough speed or you possibly are pushing them so hard (especially if your using softer alloys) that there stripping through the rifling. Do an experiment. Water drop some to get them real hard and see if that cures it. If not try backing off your load just a touch instead of standing on it. I know exactly zero about Shuetzen shooting or what bullets are used in it. But powders dont cause bullets to become unstable. Bullets to heavy for the twist of your barrel and the speeds your shooting them at 75 percent of the time are the cause and wrong alloys or sizing covers about the rest of the problems.

Anything you would use H110/296 for. Just use a bit less of it for the same effect.

Makes an excellent Schuetzen load in my .25-20 Stevens and .25-21 rifles. Typically 6.2 grains for the 96 grain bullet I use. No filler. MV about 1400 fps. Lower SD than 4227, both guns shoot better than I can hold.

Checking notes I see that I had an AA#9 load for my Stevens 47 in .32-20. 8.3 grains, 115 grain bullet (Lyman 3118) cast of sweetened wheelweights, seated .275 deep in the case. Off bags it got about half its' groups inside 1.5 inches at 80 yards. I was fighting wind that day, and I'm a poor wind-doper.

Powder isn't causing yawing. Don't know what you mean by "peaky".

It seems everyone so far uses it like I do. I use a lot of H110 but I'm finding I like AA9 just as much. It has become my favorite for the 327 in heavier loads and my new 32 H&R Bisley is very accurate using it. I also find it can be downloaded some and still be accurate which is something I don't do with H110.

Can't help with the 200 yard gig though.

I have just started handloading with AA#9 for my Henry .327 rifle. I first just chronied loads with different charges to see how velocities charted with powder charge increases and looking for any pressure indications. When weather improves I want to take it to the range to test for accuracy, and compare it against some Lil'gun handloads. But I will be shooting open sights at 50 yards, I have nothing to report for 200.

I really like it for .357 and .44mag. The only powder I favor over it for those cartridges is 2400 because its a bit more flexible. You cant go wrong with AA9 for those 2 calibers.

I tried AA9 in my SBHs. Like H110/WW296, it wasn't quite as accurate as 2400.
