AFAIK, the lever boss date codes didn't show up until after WWII (1946-70) - a few decades later than the OP's rifle.

Now I lay me down to sleep
A gun beside me is what I keep
If I awake, and you're inside
The coroner's van is your next ride
I think I am just going to move it over into the Swappin & Sellin section and see if I can find someone with a .17 Hornet rifle rig worthy of a trade.
Factory transition parts gun, every gun manufacture had done that at one time or another, throw away nothing make something out of what’s left over . Most famous parts gun is the Winchester 1894 .32 Special in the 94 ,use up all those 32 cal barrels laying around for the 32-40 ,neck up the 30-30 to .32 wala a great new cartridge with little fuss. Lots of Colt revolvers from the same era with old style barrels on new style receivers and vice versa.
This rifle could very well have been by Savage and subsequently refinished at some point.
A 250/3000 or 250 Savage is a lot more versital than a 17 Hornet. It may only shoot 87 gr and lighter bullets. Early gun had slow twists.
