    70-150

I started this project quite some time ago. Then I got to thinking.....I have the gun, have the brass, before I start on the barrel and dies and mold.....is this an NFA item? I have had a hankerin for this since I was a teen and saw it on a cartridge board at the sporting goods shop my grandfather frequented.

I’m not sure what a 79-150 is but it doesn’t sound to far from a 10 ga. Shotgun shooting a 150 gr. BP charge which could be something much different in smokeless powder.
I would like to know what type of action, and firearm you have to make this large bore in ?
I know there is some silly rule sporting rifles cannot be larger than 50 cal. But if it is a shotgun.. then I believe it can be larger ?

I screwed up the heading. It's supposed to be 70-150. And it is a rifle, basically a brass 12ga necked down to 70 caliber.

The 70-150 is an interesting round. I found dimensions and turned up one on the lathe just to see what it looked like . It is over the 50 cal limit but it may depend on what you put it in as the pre 1898 clause ( curios and relics) rifles may be exempt also. Another issue will be if the barrel tenon has enough to support this big a round.

From what I understand the round was on the promotional cartridge boards but only test / prototype rifles were made or it. I dont think it ever went into production. It does show up in cartridges of the world and reloaders guide to case forming.

It is listed in Barnes's Cartridges of the World. It was really a promotional trick back in the late 1880-90s by Winchester. Rumor has it that they (Winchester) chambered one of their 1887 lever shotguns for this round w/ a rifled barrel. Was never a production item as far as anyone knows.

.700 Nitro is legal, so this one would be as well.

After the re-introduction of the 1887 a fellow offered conversions to 70-150. Has anybody ever seen one?

It's definitely a novelty! But hey, I have had that itch for quite some time. There was a Winchester collection in Washington that has one in it that is claimed to be factory made.
I contacted the ATF this morning, I was told that it should be exempt - but she told me she would double check and I should get an exception letter. I believe that the manufacturer of rifles like the various NE cartridges get that taken care of before being built. And I recall having something to that effect that came with a Dakota Arms 577 tyrannosaur that I once owned. I'll be sharing this as I go through with my quest!

Would you mind sharing the conversion method that was used in the book?

This Cartridge is not a Trick . it was made by Winchester To Compete with The British double Rifle trade. Based on the Winchester Model 1887 lever action shotgun. The barrel was rumoured to be Paradox : meaning Part smooth Bore , part rifled. Strictly for dangerous game
Sale by Winchester is so far unknown.

I think I would offer the dangerous animal a chance to shoot it and sneak off while it is regaining conscience.

Tuck it over your shoulder, when the dangerous animal gets just short of the butt pad of the shotgun, squeeze the trigger? Almost evil but I like it

Cougars like to blind side. I would not feel bad if I thwarted one trying to give me a “top down cat scan” using that tactic!

What action are you going to build on?
I was going to suggest the 1887. The Norinco forged replicas are hell for stout. I think White Labs proofed them at 45k in 12ga.
I have a 20" smoothbore with sights on it. I have a rifled blank that I'd like to put on, but I have too many projects going already...
