    Indented has check?

    For some reason, my gas checks are indented. Hopefully the picture is clear enough to see what I mean. Is this going to be an issue? What would cause this?

    1st question -- what process and equipment did you use to achieve this?

    Off the top of my head, it looks like the pusher had gunk on it.

    They should be OK if you can't pry it off with a fingernail.

    If you're using a sizer/luber like a RCBS, the inner rod of the sizer die is concave.
    Yours might have a build up of lube on yours.

    Mine do that on occasion if I put too much pressure on the handle.
    I just wipe it off with a Q tip when it happens.

    Equipment is a Lee push thru sizer .501 with the associated push rod.

    I didn’t think I had a bunch of lube on there, but there may have been.

    I’m unable to pull them off without really working for it, so they seem to have crimped just fine.

    Are they consistent? Are the checks have this before applying? I've seen a slight indent on some 44 checks, just part of making them.

    It’s very consistent. All of the checks are indented before seating them, after which the indent is still there- but just not as prominent.

    Try starting one nose down on the Lee stem but put a piece of metal that won't dent like a thick wide washer over the die hole and then press the base against it. If this flattens it then the check may not be seated before being crimped on. If that works try setting the check this way first, then size it. Another way would be to use a hammer to tap the installed check to see if that flattens it. I have a GC expander tool from NOE with the sizes I use. These flatten the GC base and open it a little so they will seat if that is the problem (like after PC).

    Put the check on the bullet and give it a solid hit against the table before you size and see if that cures it. You can use the punch from your sizer, and squeeze the bullet and check against the seating stem of your die. Run the stem in such a manner that the press bumps it but not too hard so you don't bump up your bullet.

    I PC instead of lubing. I've never noticed an indent on the bottom of the gas check, but I'll check a few. I do sometimes have to tap the boolit lightly with a rubber mallet to seat the check. This may indeed be your problem.

    what's the nose profile of that boolit?
    IF it's flat you could put a small [1" square x 3/8 - 1/2" piece of cutting board UHMW (plastic) between the pushrod and the push-through sizer and seat the check then push the boolit through the sizer.

    If its round nose, build up a layer of hot glue on the UHMW, press the nose of a boolit in the glue before it cools, and use that between the pushrod and push-through die to seat the GC

    this is a "jig" I made for seating GC

    I agree a separate GC seating is needed. Hornady 30 cal checks all have a dish in the bottom. Accuracy wise, I think a perfectly flat bullet base is best. Once the bullet is pressed down in the GC and the bottom flattens, you need to size base first.

    If the boolit base doesn't reach the sizing area of the Lee die with your stock push rod, then what is happening is, the next boolit nose pushes against the GC/boolit base of the first boolit, moving the first boolit through the rest of the sizing area...but you don't have full support on the GC, so the friction allows the GC to pull away, while the center of the GC is tight to the boolit base, due to the contact of the next boolit...giving you dish shaped GC bases (AKA: indented)

    What you need is a longer push rod. I've experienced this before and years ago, I had theperfessor make me a set of extended push rods.

    Put the GC on the bullet and push through base first.
    ASSUMING you are using a flat point bullet.
