Which Accurate powder for the heavier .357 Magnum cast bullets?

Which of the Western Accurate brand powders would work well with 158 grain through 180 & 187 grain cast bullets for full power loads? I lean towards the Accurate line since their load data lists the 180 & 187 grain Cast Performance bullets, but mostly I shoot 158 grain NOE FPGCs. I want to standardize one load for the NOEs after using up the heavier stuff. Thanks in advance!

#9 works very well and Ive found it to be low flash, for what its worth.

I second this nomination. But H110 performs exceptionally well also.

accurate #9 for full power , the #5 will also work but it's more of a medium speed powder sorta like Unique . Good for mid level loads if you want to tame things down some

In Accurate powders I use #9 under a 180gr WFN GC bullet in my Marlin 1894C's. 12 gr gives me about 1500 fps. Good accuracy also. #7 also works well.

13.0 grains of Accurate No. 9 under a 180-grain Sierra FPJ shoots like a laser out of my ‘79 1894C. I don’t have a chronograph so don’t know the velocity. Someone guess at it for me, please.

I am also a true fan of AA#9 in both .357 mag and .44 mag. But I have found that AA#7 is a bit more suited to my 3" barreled SP-101 in .357.

well, if you'll send me a couple hundred of them loaded rounds I'll run them through the chrony. It will have to be through a 16" Rossi R92 though.

    just send to:

    I'm guessing around 1650 fps.

Your 13 gr load should be doing a bit over 1600 fps according to my ballistics program.

    Thanks, men.
If my calculations are correct, that equates to 1,022 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. Should be great for feral pigs out to 75 yards.

Are small pistol magnum primers recommended for Accurate #9? (for .357 Magnum)

You might want to look at the new 11FS - its burn rate is similar to H110 (the lot I have seems a bit slower) and the FS stands for "flash suppressed". The limited testing I've done indicates it performs better with bullets on the heavier for caliber side.

    FWIW,

Ive never had troubles with regular small pistol primers. Same with LPP in .44 mag.

I have always used standard primers. But when the craziness dies down I may try magnum primers to see if there are any improvements.

I want to try some. When I can find a can in my area I will see how it does in my rifles with 180 gr bullets.

Online data from Western Powder also shows good numbers for 180 & 200 grain bullets using AA 4100 and AA TCM powders along with AA 11FS.
Someday when the stores around here get some in I'm going to have to give them a try.

I use AA#7 in my 3" SP-101 since it does burn a bit faster than #9. I do prefer #9 in my .357 and .44 mag lever guns though.
