Took grandson Tyler to the swamp for a Christmas present, his first real taste of hog hunting. Had to get a few basics down first.....
No, no, no son, the big black one!
Got that out of the way and proceeded don a muddy 2-track a bit. Spotted 5 or 6 in the back of a slough and proceeded to stalk down a palmetto ridge toward them, Tyler in the lead. I've forgotten how fast a half grown pup wants to run but reined him in about every 10 yds. Suddenly a good sized boar stood up out of his bed, not 10 yds to the side, and beleive it or not the boy got an arrow away in a flash. Plugged him high in the shoulder but got just enough penetration to nick his spine. Turned him around but couldn't run and the next arrow quartering away took his heart. Pretty good work for a kid's first hog and old grandpa had moment where I thought that boar was gonna come at him.
Ok, to keep it on the topic of shotguns I had to get in on the act with a load of "pretty in pink" OO to bring down a nice sow.
Tyler killed 2 more cleanly with good stalks in the palmettos and cane with another probable and one clean miss.
I got another one with a slug. So 5 pigs in 2 days, tough time of the year as they have mostly gone nocturnal. Tyler became attached to my old flop hat so Merry Christmas!
