    Reclaiming gas checks?

    Gentlemen,
I recently cast some boolits that I decided are losers. They are checked and lubed. Can I reuse the checks if I peel them off? I think not since they are now crimped. I hate to just throw them in the scrap bucket, they aren't cheap if you can even find them now.

    Thanks,
    Ken

You can open them back up with a 5/16 punch ground with a taper and chucked in a drill press. Lube with a bit of graphite and it works fine.

Interesting info Bazoo, I may have to try that. I have had to pull down some cast loads in the past and pitched the gas checks. Thanks

Would it work then with the ones that from when you melt down the recover boolits that have the GC on also to do the same things then after you take the checks out when you flex from smelting your recover boolits .

Seems like they'd have marks from the lands of the barrel they were fired though.

I will try that. I have taper punches so that's easy. Thanks for the info!

I have some checks that would not fit the bullet I wanted to put them on

I made a similar punch to the one described above. It works well.

Once you recover the now 'annealed' gas checks from melting down the fired bolits, run them back through your checkmaker; good as new!

For the cheap price of a GC, throw the bullets in the melting pot and let the GC’s float to the surface with the gross and .... throw them in the garbage. You won’t have to file for bankruptcy loosing a few GC’s

My first thought when reading the OP's comments were 'wow, this is what we've come to?'

I'd imagine that the checkmaker's are probably severely backlogged.

I could bring myself to reload primers if I had to but rinsing and reusing toilet paper is still beyond me.

When I put boolits in the melt with a gc on them, they usually have lead stuck to them when skimmed off. They are not worth the time to scrape off any lead.
