    Brussel sprouts

Ran across these yesterday on my monthly trip to town. I'll bet there are folks in some parts of the country who have never encountered Brussel sprouts in this form--on the stalk--rather than sold individually from a bin.

No mystery here. You just cut them off the stalk and prepare however you normally fix them.

I always hated Brussels. As a youth, my mother used to boil them. Just horrible. I now grill them in foil, with bacon and garlic until blackened. Absolutely delicious! I just bought 2 lbs today.

Wow, in my 60+ years I have never seen them on the stalk like that. I always thought that they were each an individual little "sprout". I wouldn't go out of my way to get them, but if someone puts them on my plate I'll eat them.

We have grown them years ago, the neat thing is that thy will keep growing under the snow. After cutting them off like in the pic. I found them still growing and trying to poke out of the snow .

Makes you wonder how many people know what real food looks like any more or where it came from and what you are supposed do with it.

A little oil and salt pop put them in the oven on a baking sheet add some potato's and carrots ='s some good eating.

I core then, fill the cored area with chopped bacon mixed with butter, S&P, arrange core side up in a foil pan(use crumpled foil to make a spacer if needed, these need to stay core side up) and smoke until tender. I cover after 30-45 minutes(depends on smoker temp) or they can get to smokey. Can add chopped garlic to the bacon and butter mix... don't tell your cardiologist you ate these!

I love them, one of my favorite vegetable. We just steam them until they're soft but still a little firm.

Yes, I guess there's a thousand recipes on how to fix them. Like richhodg66 I usually steam them until still firm, then half them and serve them with a little butter on them, salt and pepper. They're also good with a cheese sauce poured over them, with crumbled bacon bits on top, or you can used them that same way on half of a large baked potato. I never heard of them growing in the snow before, that's a new one on me. I think the places where they grow the best are along the coast (either west or east) and like an occasionally foggy environment. An interesting veggie, that's for sure.

We had them survive early snow where thy were covered by snow we thought it would have killed them but it didn't. It wasn't a hard freeze .

if you leave them on the stalk, they're easier to pitch in the trash.

I'M JUST PLAYIN', enjoy your veg!

I love them, especially baked! They have to have a loooong moderate cool growing season. It's funny, they sell the plants around here every spring to unsuspecting fools who don't know Tennessee weather (we only have about a month of spring, then move rite to summer). The poor things get attacked by a million different insects, then just wither and die in the heat about the time the buds start to form. I've only seen one person successfully grow them in a hoop house during a mild winter, and she started the seed in about August.

I first saw these on the stalks was in the UK where my wife was stationed. We wandered down to the local Saturday market and a vender had a cart full of freshly picked Brussel sprouts. We cooked them up in garlic butter with salt and pepper. They were mighty tasty.

I love Brussels sprouts. They are one of the last things to be harvested from the garden. I always enjoy eating a few raw vegetables when I am in the garden. One day I decided to try some Brussels. They tasted a little salty. Later I realized my Border Collie was peeing on them each time he went by.

I bought one like that last year, loved it. I would trim off enough for a meal, cook them. The ones on the stalk stayed fresh and tasted awesome even a month after I had started trimming sprouts off it to eat.

Normally I trim mine off the stalk, trim off any yellowed or discolored leaves. Cut them in half, place in a small microwave safe container with lid, add a few drops of water, a small pat of butter and a light touch of salt.

3 min in the microwave and you have a healthy green veg that is tasty and good.

Brussels are one of my favorites, and on the stalk they are excellent!
I truly believe we need to get back to basics.

When I lived in Montreal I had a weekend place in upstate New York. I had a 1 acre garden and would plant about 100 brussels sprouts plants. We would not harvest them until after the first frost. They were great. We would spend all week at home putting them up in the freezer. I have tried to grow them down here in Louisiana without success.

Winco had them on the stalk last year but not this year. I pair them with other aromatics, onion, garlic and bacon grill and add balsamic vinegar. We don't have many leftovers.

Many years ago I used to breed lab rats for the snake breeders, every two weeks I would replace each enclosure with a clean one with new bedding material, somebody gave me a bag of Brussel Sprouts so I put two in each enclosure, two weeks later at cleaning time I found two Brussel Sprouts in each enclosure, it appears to me rats like all children don't like them either.
