In your list of preferences for stock, you've picked either Claro or Turkish walnut as well as some synthetic. I would also much prefer wood, don't own any plactic stocks and never will. I would discourage you from Claro. While it is beautiful and makes a very nice rifle to look at, under even light use it will easily pick up dents and worse. Its just not very hard. Turkish or English are the best but pricey. American Black Walnut or Bastogne will get it done beautifully and leave some money in your pocket.

If you are worried your son might not be able to use a rifle in an exotic caliber I would stick to standards. The .35 Whelen is a good choice but the 98 Mausers I have owned had rather short actions - designed for 57 mm long brass. The .30-06 case is 63.35 mm long. The .35 Whelen case is 62 mm long. Also, many .358 boolits are pretty long so I would consider a .358 Winchester. The .358 case is 51.18 mm long according to SAAMI.

    Leadlubber -

    Howdy !

How 'bout a mini-express deer rifle, in .35 Remington ?

Back in the -70's, I saw one European rifle maker offer a double barrelled "express" rifle, chambered in .35 Rem .

I have seen M-93's that were converted over to .35 Remington.

Next step up in .358" calibre would be a .358Win.

    Just some thoughts.

    With regards,

Check out the custom rifle forum at Accurate Reloading. They talk about a lot of express rifles there.
