    .38 Special Mid Range

Looking at the description of the ammunition, what does .38 Special Mid Range mean, as opposed to .38 Special?

.38 Special mid range is not a separate cartridge, it is (was?) a specific loading, a 148 grain wad-cutter bullet loaded to around the mid 700's fps velocity, made primarily for target shooting. The combination of bullet weight and velocity gives low recoil and the sharp shouldered wad cutter bullet made nice clean holes in paper targets which are easier to score.

The old Bullseye load I used on cotton tails!
    Thanks for the info.

I knew that mid range connoted the target shooting but I never had seen loaded ammo specifically called out by that name. Or perhaps after so many years I don't remember. Thanks again.

The S&W model 52 and the Colt Midrange were semiautos that shot the .38 Special cartridge. A full wadcutter was used because of past success in revolvers and to shorten the cartridge for a semi auto's action.
