Interesting Scope reticle found on Ebay auction

    Folks,

Anyone ever see an upside down German #1 reticle on a rifle scope?

I picked one up on an Ebay auction a few months back (Monoscope brand 2.5x by 40mm) that was advertised as a post reticle but when it arrived, when the scope is mounted with the elevation dial on top of the scope, the reticle is inverted. I'm attaching an image of what the reticle appears as when its mounted. I've currently have plans for it to go on my Win 94 in .32 Winchester Special since its an almost perfect brush gun scope.

Never seen one, but have often thought it would make more sense to have it "inverted" so the hold over does not obscure the target at longer ranges, cool find!

I have a post reticle on my marlin 336 in 32 win special.. i love it.. its a 4 power 1959 japan made sweetheart.. you are right on it being a perfect brush scope.. easy to acquire target in lower light as well. i took several deer and 2 bears last year with it in the deep dark woods.. mine is not inverted though. not sure how I would like that..

I believe that is a German post they came up with to not obscure targets when holding over, as stated above. I believe on a hunting rifle it would be ideal. I believe I would shoot some groups with it using the point and then the post as a square ( where the triangle starts) to get an idea how many moa it is so I had a reference when I had to hold over.

I'm not a scope expert so forgive me if I'm way off. Some scopes I hear have the reticle etched on the glass. Maybe this is one and the ocular lens has been turned 180 degrees.

Looks like a manufacturing defect, I’ve never seen or heard of one inverted. Then again, I don’t get out much anymore

Correct. Not common but was deemed useful to some european hunters.

I have a copy of “Complete Book of Rifles and Shotguns” written by Jack O’Conner in 1961. This type of reticle was mentioned on p. 285 as being an old idea that never caught on.

I saw a globe front sight with a hanging post like that. It was on a Savage 25-20 bolt action with reciever sight and the seller stated that he believed that it was for unblocked elevation sight picture as well. It makes sense.

I like that advice! Just need to find range time now...

    .

Once upon a time, I had a 4x with an inverted post.

It seemed very strange to use on suddenly-presented shots at first, given the "normal" reticles I was used to, but after awhile (and plenty of practice) I became proficient with it.

I read some of the German snipers used to mount their scope up side down to get a clear picture and hold over.
That was about snipers in ww1 and ww11 thou.

Weaver used to make a similar post reticle in the more orthodox orientation. My late father had one like that, a K4-F mounted on his No. 5 Enfield for decades, only replacing it after it failed to take adjustments. Man, he could shoot that thing, he really liked that reticle style.

The SUIT scopes (trilux) used with the FAL rifle have an inverted post (minus the horizontal bar). It's an okay design but in my opinion, there are much better modern reticle designs.

Got a 1912 German single-shot with a period Zeiss scope on it that has the inverted post. Takes some getting used to. Was said to make holding over easier, and I can see how it would.
