    Happy Camper!

Just scored what could be a lifetime supply of COWW and SOWW. The owner of a large commercial truck tire business said I could harvest all the WW out of their 55 gallon barrel. Turns out commercial trucks have mainly lead WW and they're huge! Took about 15 minutes to collect about 100 pounds checking each one with tin snips and I only scratched the top 2". Only about 30% zinc. Owner told me to buy him breakfast sometime.

    Cool.

I used to know a guy who worked at the city bus terminal.
He would bring me ones they couldn't reuse.
They were so big---- I thought they looked like a banana compared to the ones for car tires.

Nice! Some of those big truck weights contain babbit metal.

A good friend of mine who has passed on would bring me what he could get in a paint bucket from time to time. He was a trailer mechanic for a truck line many moons ago.
I would get what he could carry in a gallon paint can. Those made some hard bullets. I wish I had known about the 50/50 WW/Pure 40 years ago. The main thing about it,
those kept me and his son shooting.

Old Ears, welcome to this great forum!! In 2018, I was wandering around a scrap yard in Lancaster, Ohio and in the scrap lead box was about 100 pounds of 8 ounce truck weights!! Needless to say, it all left with me!! That was an awesome find, and can’t beat the price, get them ALL! Good find!!!!

Welcome Aboard! Thats a great first post!

Thats a great score! I would keep going back until I had all of them. Lead weights are still out there but are getting harder to find. Impossible to find in some places. You owe your friend more than just 1 breakfast! Maybe donuts for the shop guys and office sometime.

I had some from semi-trucks before and I found that they were high in antimony. Made for hard alloy.

Some of the COWW felt hard and all these are from heavy trucks. I may need to send a sample to BNE to have them tested.

Nothing like ready made alloy. And you can cut it with the soww.

I just smelted about 75 lbs. that had quite a few of those monsters mixed in. There were also a couple dozen battery terminals and maybe about 10 lbs. of plumber's lead. Surprisingly the ingots still tested at 15 bhn.

Just pulled another 100 lbs. out of the barrel. 2 to 1 CO over SO and I'm only a quarter of the way down. Some of these monsters are 10 oz and I had one at 12 oz. So far I've pulled 250 lbs. of lead out and only wound up with a 1/3 bucket of zinc and iron. Sure different than digging through car shop buckets.

Reaching into that barrel as you go deeper makes my back hurt just thinking about it. A scoop on a long handle might save you the cost of a bottle of Aleve...

I had the same thought. The truck weights are so much bigger than car weights. Maybe someone on the forum has a pic of a scoop or shovel that would work.
