Another buck with my 34 Roberts

Using my 34 Roberts I built a few years back. This was the best buck I saw during rifle season. Saw a couple dandy’s while hunting with my homemade longbow but couldn’t close the deal.

Cartridge is a shortened 338-06 by .250. Boolit is a 200 gr from accurate pushed to near 2000 fps by re7. It very pleasant to shoot at this velocity and while the 14” twist would let me go considerably faster recoil starts to rear it head.

This buck was about 80 yds out in the brush. I could tell he was quartering to me with only his nose, neck and edge of his shoulder showing. In the binoculars I could see there was not a twig in the way. Boolit entered on the neck about 8” front of the shoulder and bulged the hide at the opposite shoulder. He reared up and fell over backwards which was good. The hill is very steep. I have him tied to the tree in the pic to keep him from sliding down the hill. 200’ of rope and a 4 wheeler got him to the top where I could field dress him.

Good buck, and a good story. Your wildcat 34 Roberts sounds exactly like a cartridge that Jack O'connor suggested as his idea for an all around hunting cartridge: a 338 bullet on the x57 case. The only thing that was ever made close to this was the 338 Federal, but I think that cartridges based on the Mauser case are very cool. Your story about getting your deer up a steep hill made me laugh. A long time ago I was pig hunting with a friend named Tony. We'd stalked a group of pigs, but they caught wind of us and bolted. We thought that the hunt was over for the day and were walking back down a dirt road to where I'd parked my truck. About half way back to the truck we heard pigs grunting and making pig noises down a steep ravine beside the road. We crept on our bellies until we were in a good position to take our shots. We both got a pig. That hill was steep and long, and it took both of us to lug Tony's pig back up to the road. The plan was to get the pigs to the road, then I'd go down and bring up the truck. Then when it was time to go get my pig, Tony says "Can't do it man, I'm bushed." and sits down on a tree stump to smoke a cigarette. What a typical hunting buddy!!! It took me half an hour to drag my pig up that hill. In retrospect it was hilarious.

Yes, I bored a 7x57 barrel to .338 with a 14” twist. Cut the chamber with a 338-06 reamer until it cleaned up the 7x57 shoulder.
Body is the shape of the 06 cartridge. Neck is same length as the 338-06.
I chose this cartridge because I had all the parts to build it laying on the work bench except a barrel. I bought one from someone on here.

It won’t do anything many other guns won’t do buts it mine.

That sounds like a .338 Federal.

Case capacity is slightly higher than a 338 federal. Without spending a lot of money I couldn’t get a 338 federal in anything but a 10” twist.
While I often hunt with older gun/cartridge combos that are cast friendly I wanted a modern type that was.
I could have bought a new 358 win but I would need brass, dies, molds, gas checks and sizer die. I had all of this in 338 cal along with a Turkish action.
With a Timney trigger, Gentry mod 70 style safety and a Leupold 2-7x33 its a very nice rig. The stock is a Boyd’s prairie hunter semi inlet that I cut to fit me.
