Small Pistol Primers 30 Carbine

With respect tp Lil Gun and N110 can one use small pistol primers in the 30 carbine?

I would not do that. reason is when the rifle cycles it may detonate the thinner walled pistol primer with a slam fire. I would just not do it in a semi auto. A bolt gun maybe.

You didn't say whether you were loading them for a Carbine or for a Blackhawk or AutoMag III.
I separate mine into rifle and pistol loads (I treat the Blackhawk like a skinny-chambered .38/357) and use rifle primers for the carbine loads and pistol primers for the revolver loads. The Blackhawk and AutoMag III have a heavy enough hammer fall to fire factory loads, which of course have rifle primers, but those primers are overkill for the W231/Bullseye/TiteGroup wadcutter loads I make for the Blackhawks. Of course the AutoMag III needs more oomph to cycle the action.
But you asked about powder ignition - I would stick with the rifle primers for the LilGun-296-H110-N110 class of powders just to make sure you're gonna get proper ignition. I hope that helps.

For factory loads and any loads approaching those pressures, stick with the rifle primers. I'm not sure that even magnum small pistol primers are up to containing 46,000 c.u.p. stresses. I'd be especially certain to use small rifle primers if you use H110 as a propellant. Since reduced loads with H110 are potentially problematic at best, use "all the original band members", so to speak.
Not having any experience with Li'l Gun nor N110, I don't know how they behave with reduced loads. They appear to be more "reduceable" than H110, but that's not saying much. Looking a Vihta Vuori's data, I'm seeing starting loads that I would NOT try with small pistol primers.
For MODERATE loads fueled on pistol powders, like W231 or Unique/Herco, for example, I don't see the harm in using small pistol primers, nor any real advantage to using small rifle primers to ignite them.

As in "if that's all I had" I would use the small pistol primers in a 30 carbine revolver load but only if it were loaded down. (think 38spl type load) anything close to military pressure 30 carbine loads will most likely pierce the small pistol primers with possible firing pin damage. Gp

What gpidaho said. The .30 Carbine standard load is quite high pressure, more than pistol primers are designed for.

I've recently used small pistol primers in my .30 Carbine with AL2400 (13.0 grs.), AA#9 (13.0 grs), H110/W296 and VV110 (15.0 grs.). Velocities are pretty much the same as with small rifle primers. With regards to pressure, small pistol primers are used in pistol cartridges such as the .357 Sig (40,000 psi) and 327 Federal Magnum (45,000 psi) so I see no reason they can't be used in the .30 Carbine since it's maximum pressures are similar.

37,500 psi is maximum recommended pressure for the pistol primer IIRC. 40k psi will definitely flatten them in a 458 socom.

Well I can tell you for sure that Hodgdon, Alliant and Western/Accurate all use SP primers in their .327 Federal data loads, and Western even uses them in the 5.7x28 data with loads approaching 50K psi.
