Swapping barrels on the savage axis

Do the budget axis models still have the barrel nut arrangement as other savage rifles ? Will the prefit savage 10/110 barrels thread on ?

From my understanding the small shank barrels from any 10 or 110 family rifle will fit on an axis. But not large shank like some mags and the lapua mag barrels. I don't own an axis, but I have done some 110 rebarreling. Not sure if the new axis has the SAME barrel nut as an old 110, but eabco doesn't list the barrel nut wrenches as different between those models.

Look at Savageshooters forum for the Axis, a ton of Axis info there on switching barrels, what fits, what doesn't. I'm pretty sure most small shank barrels, model 10 or 110 will work. They do use the barrel nut. Marlin Model X7 barrels possibly too. Bolt heads need to be correct for the cartridge size.

I just checked the Savage Shooter site. They say that all small shank 110 barrels will fit the Axis.

I have rebarelled about 20 of the Savage Axis rifles. The new ones have the smooth barre nut, I usually take them off with a pipe wrench and toss them, put on a regular one readily available. I have found that putting a headspace gauge in the barrel, put the nut on then put the barrel in the barrel vise. I then screw the action on until the bolt wont close on the gauge. I then back the action off enough, that when I close the bolt, the bottom third of the of the stroke needs to be very close, hard to close. That way when you tighten the nut up, it backs the barrel off a bit, and you end up with about 1-2 thousandths headspace, about as perfect as you can get. I have built about 60 rifles total on Savage actions, using this method, and have had zero problems, and some dang good shooters every one.

koger makes it sound fairly easy/ doable. I've never changed a barrel, but watched several videos. I've read that someone makes a Savage barrel nut that fits a common end wrench.

Koger has it right in my wheel house as well.

The Marlin X Series barrels will screw on but they are said to need about .020” faced off the breech to mate up correctly to a Savage bolt face (not just Axis but any modern Savage or Stevens for that matter).

I have only done about 7 switches. An the only problem i had was finding a bolt face for a left hand 308. Replacing it was easy peasy.
The only barrel i would like to find at a reasonable price is a 358Win.

JES will rebore a .243, 7-08, or .308 to .358 Winchester for $250 or so. That's pretty reasonable and the light weight is a bonus.
