    Qual-cart and 8.15x46R Cases

Does this company still exist. They have stuff listed on the internet, but the link to where to buy (qual-cart.com)gives me a 404 error.

I’m interested in 8.15x46R cases. Supposedly they are not hard to make yourself, but I don’t have any experience yet in doing so. Thought if I could buy some first, that would be a good way to start.

Any information on this company or others who may make this brass or if I should simply do it myself will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

8.15 is about as easy a case to form as there is. Run a a 30-30 case into an 8.15 die, trim and shoot. On some rifles you might have to thin the rim but so far I've never had to.

Of all the brass conversions I've done, 30-30 to 8.15x46R was one of the easiest. As the other poster said, run it through the sizing die and trim.

Thanks for all the information. I think I will try to make the brass myself, if it’s as easy as others say. That just adds to the fun of the addiction. The gun is in transit to me now. I don’t have a guarantee it’s really a 8.15x46R. It could be a 8.15x54R. I think it is a really cool gun and am determined to figure out what it needs to shoot it.

Nice looking rifle Greg! Do you have the aperture sight as well? It's good...and rare...you have the barrel sight. I found one for one of my rifles purely by accident. There's a lot of data out there for the 8.15.

Been there done that Greg. My first Schuetzen rifle was sold as an 8.15. Well, I NEVER acquire an old German rifle...ANY old rifle...that I don't do a chamber cast on and slug the bore. I've been surprised 3 or 4 times. The Schuetzen turned out to be what we named an 8.7 X 55R. I sent the dimensions to Axel Eichendorff and he was not familiar with a cartridge with those dimensions. It was easy to make the cases, just fireform the 30-30 and trim. Had to order a .345 mold for the 348 WCF from Accurate. It turned out to be a FINE shooter!!

I have no guarantees what caliber it is. So far I’ve read that there can even be big variances in what is called a 8.15x46R. It is a French gun and I’ve read about a 8.15x54R being used at the turn of the century.

I’ve never done a chamber cast before. I guess the only practical way is with Cerrosafe. From what I’ve read, I’m not crazy about having to adjust for shrinkage. However, I can’t do a pound cast without a case of close to the correct size, can I? I’ve found a source for the cases, so I think I will just buy 20 to start, if the gun looks to be 8.15x46R.

Unfortunately the front sight is a simple blade, but I’m still happy.

I’d think that on that Martini type action it will be the x46R
If the important measurement is the case (chamber) length, a cast is as a easy as spraying a little Pam cooking spray in there and using a hot glue gun to make the cast.
Just plug the bore ahead of the chamber with a wad of tissue and pop the glue cast out with a cleaning rod after it’s cooled.
Not precision but useful for a simple ID

If I buy the correct brass, I assume it fits a 30-30 shell holder from Lee. There’s not another that has a closer fit is there?

What Huvius said. Include a couple inches of the bore and you'll have the groove dimension at the same time. At least that portion just in front of the chamber. Until I finally bought some Cerrosafe I used a crayon melted down and plain old sulfur melted down works quite well but, it is as brittle as glass. I don't believe shrinkage is a consideration with either of those. At any rate, they will be close enough.

I use a 30 WCF shell holder and it works just fine. I never bothered to look for another. Odds are it is 8.15 as about 95% of them made after the turn of the century were.

As evidently the cases can be purchased, I'd do as you mention and buy some. Forming them from 30 WCF can be done at any time and is sort of a fun thing to do.
