    KY Buck down!

Got in the blind at 6:30 am, decent shooting light at 7:00am. 7:05 a big bodied deer with decent looking horns cuts across the field at 275 yds and starts quartering away. I track him in the scope on my 6.5x284 Savage I built 2 years ago. He never stops walking and I pull in front of him as I pull the trigger. Whop! I hear the bullet impact on him and he goes over the knoll out of sight, dragging one front leg. I text my wife, told her I had made a good hit, but to keep hunting another hour at least. She shows up about 8:30 and we go looking for him, find him about 50 yds from the point of impact. He is 30 feet in the woods, we back the Ranger up and drag him out with a rope. He is a good 6pt. with a 17" inside spread and long big body. How he went the distance he did, both front legs were broken, and punched thru the heart. I was shooting a Sierra 140BTSP Game king that I handload running about 3100fps with a load of H4831 behind it. I wanted to kill my buck with a Cast boolitt in a single shot rifle of some type, had a 45/70 with open sights with me also, but out of range with open sights. A hour later we have him on ice, boned out. I would not be able to hunt without my wifes help, getting into blind on crutches, and back out, helping me retrieve my deer and process it. I might have held out longer, I did see 3 other bucks while I waited on the wife, all smaller than the one I shot. I am grateful for every deer the good lord sends my way. I will get some pics to TBG to post.

Another great hunt , thanks for sharing. It is amazing the drive they have to live, not that they are hard to kill so much as it’s hard to put them down and keep them
So sometimes. Back when lower MI was shotgun only zone I’ve seen deer take 3 inch slugs inside 40 yards to the heart sometimes a second hit and go forever , 100-200-300 yards with no heart. Amazing!

Congrats and glad you were able to retrieve him. Not having mobility sucks but your wife sounds great.

Wonderful story and glad for your success, Koger. Glad you have the assistance of a fine woman. I'm out of action this upcoming gun season with a gimpy foot, unless one of the son's wants to be of help. But I know at least one of them is champing at the bit to go after the deer hard, as I did at that age, and don't want to intrude on their hunt. I've at least sighted in the 45/70 should son #2 want to borrow it. The cast boolits are loaded and I am more than happy for him to put this combination to use.
