340 savage .222 conversion to 32f federal question

Looking at a nice 340 savage in .222 for a future project. Any and all comments welcome.
My intent is to buy a .312 barrel blank and have it fitted to the savage action, and chambered for 327 federal.
I intend to buy the rifle and barrel blank myself and have a good gunsmith do the actual work.
What I am asking is, from those who have far more knowledge of such projects, who would be a good supplier for an accurate barrel?
It MAY be possible to modify a .222 magazine to make a functional bolt action, but for now I go in with the intent to just have a single shot rifle.
I already know I will easily have over $1,000 tied up in this before it is over.

Savage made a 32-20 bolt action clip fed. Could be loaded pretty hot in a bolt action.

Just a thought, a .300 Blackout in a 340 would be easier and you'd still have a .30 caliber that could match the .327 Federal ballistics if you wanted it to.

I am considering this exact project myself.

I would go single shot for my application.

Is there a reason you're hung up on a bolt action .327? Lots of 340s in .30-30 which downloads to those levels with cast or jacketed very easily.

If I was going to put such expense in a project I would not start with a 340. I have had 2 in 222, both scoped side mounted, and while I realize you may not go with a scope the fact that they only have one action screw, and a ring band way up the barrel towards the end of the stock were a screw goes through the stock and threads into this barrel band .On one of mine I took the band plum off,and used it without it.

I would suggest a cadet martini rifle. Couple reasons for this.
Good strong action and is already setup for a centerfire cartridge. Only the extractor and new barrel need be installed. Have the gunsmith turn the barrel down to the same contour as the original barrel. And install the lug from the old barrel onto the new one. This way you can use the original wood and barrel band. Some of those little martinis have some nice wood on them. Don't know chamber pressures for your cartridge so may have to get the firing pin turned down and bushed. Scope bases ok going from memory but the Redfield one piece junior base for the contender can be used. And see if Burris rings with the synthetic inserts can be used on Redfield junior one piece bases. Wish you well on your project. Frank

Just make sure you don't shoot it first. The accuracy of the 222 & 223 in these is excellent.
If you go with a single shot you can be in an Encore with a custom bbl for a lot less money.

Especially if you already have a Contender or Encore. For less than the price of a decent rifle, MGM will make you a barrel. Gonna have one made eventually for mine in .25-20.

Most of the barrel blanks in .310 - .312 caliber are for rifle cartridges and have too fast of a twist for pistol bullets. You need a barrel blank with a twist of around 1-16 to work really well in a 32 H&R or 327 Federal. A 1-10 twist barrel might work, but that's a lot of time and effort to build a custom rifle and not know if it's going to shoot well. My suggestion is to buy the 222 caliber 340, then shoot it. If it turns out to be a 200 yard tack driving varminter then don't change it, and decide to build the 327 on something else. If the rifle doesn't preform well as a 222, then try the conversion.

I had one of those a long time ago and it was really good. On a good day, I could cut barbed wire fencing at just under 100 yards. For some stupid reason, I sold it to buy a "better" rifle.

The triggers are kind of the weak point. I have a .222 one, also a .30-30 and the Stevens 322 in Hornet. The 340 is probably at its best as a .30-30.

Was contemplating making the .222 into a .25 Copperhead at one point, but it'll probably never happen.

You might consider an M1 Carbine Receiver and leave the gas system off to operate it as a Straight Pull manual type action. Fulton Armory makes Very good quality new Receivers for less than $300.00 each.
You might try Lothar Walther, Schilen, Or Douglas for your Barrel Blank.
And May I suggest John Taylor (Taylor Machine in Washington) to do the machine work as he did a GREAT job on my Ruger Standard Auto Pistol conversion.

John Taylor has moved out of Communist Occupied Washington and over the winter will be settling into new digs in Idaho. Expect it will be spring before he has the new shop settled and will be taking new work. When I hear from him I'll advise.

Didn't know that, please do let us know. I have aproject rifle I've been meaning to send to him to do the work and I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm planning a single shot Remington Hepburn in 327Federal.

I would consider doing a .308 barrel if you are going to shoot cast. It would make loading .310-.311 bullets much easier.

You will need to buy a custom reamer. The big decision is what bullet weight you want to shoot. Shilen has a 5r with 1/17 twist.

    Just some thoughts.
