    22 L.R. shell holder? WTB

After a fire in my shop I ended up with about 11,000 - 22 LR shells. Local landfill and local recyclers will not take loaded ammo and so I must pull the bullets and dump the powder in each cartridge.

I am looking for a skilled machinist who can make a .22 LR shellholder to go with my collet bullet puller.

2 local gunsmiths have declined the job as they do not have a small enough cutter to cut the slot to slide the cartridge into the shellholder.

Anybody here equipped to do this, if so at what price?

    thanks,
    vern

Couldn’t you drill a hole in a piece of plate metal that is the diameter of the case but not big enough for the rim to pass.
Then use a pair of pliers to pull it the bullet.

Or, just grab de shell with a set of pliers and pull the bullet with a second set of pliers.

    That's how I've always pulled 22's apart...works fine for a few, don't know about 10,000!!

    Thanks, mideatl,
I went to their web site and the picture there of the shellholder appears to set down into a standard reloading press ram, but doesn't have the rim to keep it from coming out under a "pulling load". might be it's only designed for seating, or downward load. I called the company but got an answering machine and left a message.

What do you plan to do with the cases after you pull the bullets? I might be interested in if the price is right.

Cases are still primed. Could make for exciting times at the recycler.

    Okay, I'm confused.
    Why tear them apart?
If they didn't pop apart in the fire, water damage from fire fighters?
I have a NAA mini revolver with a holster that holds 5 extra rnds, whole thing went thru the washing machine.
Only 2 of the rounds would not fire after everything was dried out.

I found that Many Water soaked duds, after drying out, fired. If they were Remington and hit twice or more, they certainly wouldn't fire but the powder did d burn.

To pull apart, mill a 1/4" slot in a 3/8" thick bar. Drop a bunch in and use pliers on the protruding heads. Good luck

I would put them in a bucket of kitty litter for a couple or more months.
Then shoot them in a single shot so you could check the bore if there was a squib.

probably quicker to cut them in half with a pair of dikes or bolt cutter than pull the bullets if your goal is to destroy them.

For the forces involvwd it is ok to make the holder in 3 pieces... Base and spacer plate (u shaped0 and top plate(also a U) . I did this a couple of times and it worked for even larger calibers. I got the ide when Isaw one made like this and riveted together.

You don't need a puller, unless you must retain bullet integrity. I hold the case with my fingers, and bend the bullet out with pliers, dump powder in can, then case in can of water. After sitting in the water for a time, the priming compound leaches from the case and turns the water yellow. Sell the cases for scrap; melt the lead. I can run through quite a few rounds at a time.

I used to pull the bullets out with my teeth. I don't do that anymore because I don't have any teeth.

Just for the record; I don't want to dispose of them in any way that someone unwittingly tries to use them. Factory rep. tells me that in any heat over 400 degrees the deterrent coating on the powder "off-gasses" and firing will result in high pressures because the function of the deterrent coating on the powder is to slow the burning rate; without it you get extremes in pressure.
