Could be a blank from a kiln gun or used inside boilers to knock down clinkers off the boiler tubes?. Kiln guns usually fired into the kilns to knock down whatever is built up inside the kiln. Usually they shoot a lead slug into whatever they are trying to knock down. And when our boilers were burning coal, clinkers which was basically just coal ash would collect on the boiler tubes creating hot spots which could cause tube damage. Again, they would load up a small cannon 10 guage or 8 guage which usually had a big lead slug and fire it into the clinkers. Since our boilers were 10-11 stories tall some of the clinkers grew to epic proportions. If the gun didn't work, we'd go in the boiler and do it by hand. The lead slug was used to prevent damage to the brick work and bolier tubes. Frank
Most of the Kiln slugs I've seen were zinc I believe, but my experience is limited.
