    Wads for the Lyman 525gr

Whats your favorite wads for the lyman 525 grain slugs? I tested some waa12f114 and 12s3 (claybuster) today. Tried Longshot and bluedot. . Petals were sheared off most wads, bases ok. I used a 20ga nitro card in bottom. Charges were fairly light. 38gr of bluedot and 30 gr of longshot. It was a quick and dirty test but accuracy was questionable..
Im looking for some other wads to try as well. Ive heard a lot of guys do well with the WAA12 wads.. Im not done with the waa12f114 and 12s3 by any means but Id appreciate ideas. thansk

Use the WAA12 red wads and fill the base of the slug with hot glue.
Fill with glue and set the slug down on a hard surface, something very smooth.
I use a steel bench block that has ground surface's, glass or granite will work.

Here's a tutorial I did for a guy and federal hulls. You can see last weeks results in Hamicide thread... http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...5-for-Boomer81

Thanks Ill give those wads a try. The cards are working I can tell. No signs of tilting, clean holes in target and none compressed in base but the nitro card does make the slug stick out of the wad just a bit..

The slug needs to fit even with the wad top as that is the widest part of the slugs. Tje winchester wads are tapered and the nobel sport and trap commander are not. Forget the cards, use hot glue in the slugs and these wads for a snap flush fit.

Real WAA12 wads and STS hulls with 25 grs of Herco is my pet load for these. Here’s a 5-shot 50 yard group.

do you use a nitro card or fill the base? I know some do and it helps with accuracy and some get good accuracy dropped as cast right in the wad.. Just like any other load depends on the gun i guess.

the best way I found is old gun shops, ebay and asking on shotgun forums. Lots of times guys have older stuff laying around they dont use. I just bought a bag of original WAA12R red wads this morning for $7

For the WAA12R WADS Claybusters is supposed to have a clone. I don't know how close it is to the original though. I still have a couple of bags of the original Winchester reds bought when I loaded for ducks back in the late 70's and 80's before steel was required. They might be something to look into.

New to the group here is how I’m loading the 525 slug. Chedditte hull 18g titewad with nitro card federal 12s3 wad with a .060 aluminum card in bottom of that wad. And a roll crimp using a nick Ross 4pin roll crimp die.
