    uh....um...ah...bought 'nother one.

i should've kept my mouth shut. but noooooo i says. i have to buy it just because..........not that i needed another piece of junk that needs fixing. i still have to do my 93 mauser barrel!!!!! not to mention the 93 and 95 Mauser's and the krag actions???
    don't i already have enuff?

    my guess is no.

my......ah, "friend" HAD a 1898 spr armory in 30-40 krag (notice the quotation marks and HAD) that he wants to sell. he got it from his grandfather who died quite a few years ago. my "friend" hunts when he can, but work takes him all over the country. anyway, he told me to expect a beat up rifle and that would need loving care. alot of loving care. so what do i say? BRING IT TO ME!!!!!!!!!! well....he did and he walked away $125 richer.

the stock work needs refinished, the surface rust on the rifle needs a whole lota vinegar or evaporust. trigger guard, lower band, swing swivel and the butt plate needs a bath also. the interior barrel looks like it needs a cleaning too. the rifle came with no sights. i haven't taken it apart, other than the bolt isn't cracked and the cartridges feeds nicely. and the trigger is a 2 stage man's dream. you take up the "slop" of the trigger and then its 4 or 5 lbs till you hear the firing pin is released. ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the insides are "clean", meaning rust free. the bolt is as smooth as it ever was.

should i have bought? of course not!!!! anybody else would throw it in the scrap pile. but not me!!!! i'll give her love and maybe someday, she'll give it back.

The price for a Krag on Gun Broker is 3 or 4 times that.

Some work involved there, that's for sure; but the end result should be worth it!

I don't believe I had would have hesitated one second before I was pulling $125.00 out of my wallet. That's pretty cool.

I'd buy Krags in that condition for $125 all day long.

I'm afraid I'm with the others on this. I've got a soft spot in my head... Ah, heart, for projects like this one, too.

on rifles before i've done some touch up on the rust a little bit, you know double ought 4 sanding on a spot of rust and oxpho blue. and the wood work i can do. i can take the bolt apart and the trigger........mmmmmmmmmm.......a 4" plastic pipe, glue on cap, put it on a post on my shed upright.......some evapo rust (about 1.5 - 2 gallons), 6" long bolt and a wire hanger.....mmmmmmmm that will be for the barreled action, plastic Tupperware bowl for everything else. the only thing i don't have is a 4" cap and 2 gal of evapo rust.

Would phosphoric acid work as well? Get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. It's sold as concrete and metal prep. Does the job on rust, and leaves a protective layer that resists further rust.

Nice buy. I would have "adopted" that one myself.

On the rust issue: I use a mixture of 1 gallon water to 5 teaspoons of citric acid (at wallyworld in the home canning section). It will do a great job on the rust without being expensive or overly harsh on you or the metal. Mix the water and citric acid, place parts into the mixture, let sit for a couple days, and presto...no more rust. It will leave your metalwork without a finish so the parts have to be oiled down
as soon as they are dried.
For really rusty parts, dunk em' for a couple days, rub down with steel wool, and dunk em' again.

Looks like a bargain to me. I would have broke my arm getting the money out, for a Craig at that price.

my late grandfather(pappy) gave to me his (bubbaed) 1898 spr armory in 30-40 krag. it was his father's only rifle. my dad and my late uncle also carried it when they were young. the rifle had a bishop's stock, but i have found the "original" stock in my pappy's basement(up in the rafters). so i re-restocked it and i got on evilbay a redfield 102k aperture sight. i took the rear sight off(thank God for kroil) and the screw holes were filled with candle wax. i figured while the rifle is bubbaed up, why not go whole hog. in the end, i have a rifle that i want. it shoots a 165gr(173gr actual) ranch dog with h4198 and it goes about 1900fps. i have killed 6 or 7 deer with it and my oldest son has killed 5 or 6 deer. my son has the "longest shot" at 175+/- yards on a doe. i mostly shoot them at 30-40 yards, but at 150ish yards a doe fell to the krag. and drop right there(drt) is the krag's word. every deer i shot and my son has shot is drt. the krag and the husqvarna(m46 in 9.3x57) has that honor. the 444 marlin, 35/30-30, 30-30, '06, 270, 6.5 cm, 7 mauser, 7-08, 308, 45-70.......all have had a deer(s) run. i'll admit that the deer(s) run's is only 10-50 yards, uphill both ways, thru the brush with wolves nipping at my heels!!!!!!!
