Machine rest build

I have owned a ransom rest for about a month and in my testing, even with low SD's I was getting different amounts of muzzle rise on different shots. After looking over the machine and seeing places I thought could be improved, I began moving metal around yesterday.

Its machined vs cast because I am only making one and I tightened the wrist pin tolerance from .002 to .0004. I am going to use an inner needle thrust bearing vs the felt and make a shim that goes on the outside of that for the friction material. I am also going to incorporate windage adjustment into the base vs making it an extra part.

Still have a ways to go but I knocked out the precision machining and studs.

Very interesting, I am also eager to find out if it makes a difference. I have been using a Ransom Rest since the early 80's and am a believer. Looking at the pics, looks like you are scrapping the factory trigger actuator. My only gripe is the trigger actuator. It puts side thrust on the trigger, I believe because of the slop and flex in the design. I saw a fellow using one with a cable actuator that clamped to the trigger guard of the pistol being tested. One of these days maybe I'll come up with a contraption to do that. It doesn't seen to be a problem unless I am testing one of the polymer frame pistols although its probably affecting the others as well. As you ease down on the actuator you can see the muzzle deflect to the side.

I am still waiting on a couple parts I didn't have or at least couldn't find but I think I can do some side by side testing this weekend.

It is getting closer and I still have a little time to tinker.

I didn't like the wobble in the RR trigger linkage so I took it out by eliminatingthe spring and using a shoulder bolt against the stud to eliminate any motion other than rotational.

I don’t like all of the monkey motion either, they way they did it with the little stud and spring seems like an after thought.

The one I made doesn’t have any motion other than rotational on the bell crank but I do have a remote trigger I can throw on there to see if it makes any difference.

Well now, that is just plain old slick!! I replaced the spring/acorn nut with a nylock nut and seems to have helped. I got to where when testing the plastic pistols I just didn't use the trigger actuator, just my trigger finger or a pencil. It worked better because of no side pressure, but that remote trigger of yours is just amazing.

Well, the testing turned out to be more work than fun. Used 3 different pistols with I don’t even know how many different loads, in both the RR and the one I made, all at 25 yards. 1/2” thick stack of targets and data to go through but this was the best of the day.

10 shots of Aguila super extra through an advantage arms upper, in under 1/2”.
