    Solder question

    Gentlemen,
I was going through some old boxes of plumbing stuff that was given to me. I found several coils of solder that I will be using for alloys such as some 50/50.
There were 2 rolls, one 4oz and one 8oz of oatey solder that is labeled 95 tin and 5 ant. Is this antimony solder? I can't say that I have ever seen such a thing.

Yes 95% tin & 5% antimony it's about $20lb most places and the solder most used now for plumbing.

You've got a GREAT source for adjusting your lead mixtures, in those oatey solder. Fix hardness and/or mold fill out with small additions of these, if properly fluxed,

Lead free for plumbing. ant should indicate antimony.

As an aside, saw some solder in Walmart this morning while wife was grocery shopping. In the autommtive area, labeled for electrical work only. .58 ounces for near $2.50, worked out to about $157.00 per pound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spell check doesn't work in Chrome, so if something is spelled wrong, it's just a typo that I missed.

For those who are obsessively compulsive about exactness (why are you looking at me?) 95% lead free solder can be added in varying lengths cut onto a scale to give as many decimal places of a percent tin as might be desired.

But, as noted, paying retail would give nosebleeds.

Thanks fellas, they are as I suspected then. They will be going in the pot. I can only use so much solder for water line repairs at the house here anyway.
    Thanks,
    Ken
