    I hunt a lot with a 30-30 Savage 340, similar to the 788. I prefer a 4 power duplex.

Needed a decent variable scope for my Ruger Compact in 7.62x39.
Dealer had a lower priced 3x9 Leupold for about $200. Fits on my rifle and used Burris zee rings. Standard reticule and not one of the ones that have the cross hairs made out of 2x4"s. My first Leupold is so old it does not have any "clicks", so you just rotate the windage or elevation screw to get where you need to be. That old scope sat on more than a few rifles and never a bit of trouble. Frank

My 1969 purchase of a 788 was a 222 Had a weaver 6X on weaver rings. No problem with ejection what ever. In 1976 I had it chambered for 223 and still no problems.

An update. I tried the Weaver 30mm 1.5x4.5 scope mentioned previously but ejected brass would strike the scope and/or the turret cap and fall back unto the rail. The rifle is now wearing a Luppy 2x7 and working as it should.

The brass probably hit the turret caps. They look like they are a lot more pronounced than the Leupold. The Leupold caps on those 2x7's are pretty low profile. I had a straight 4x Leupold on my 44 mag 788 and had nary a problem.
