That is correct. Dropping a chunk of soft lead on concrete will go thud. Something hard, like linotype, will go ping.

Or maybe "crack"? Fairly brittle stuff, Lino, isn't it? Many of the Lino pigs I've picked up have broken off ears, and once I score one with a chisel and gave it a firm tap with a framing hammer and it snapped.

My alloy seems to not be as brittle as what is claimed for linotype. I made an alloy that is 50/50 pure and foundry type that should be very much like linotype but with a little extra tin. I had to drain my pot so i filled my ingot molds to over flowing. These ingot molds make 4 one pound ingots. I was breaking these up into individual 1 pound ingots and they did not crack as easily as I expected the bent a lot before they broke. I had heard that lino bullets would fragment if you dropped them on the floor. My bullets do not break if I drop them on the floor and if I hit them with a hammer they dent not fracture. They test BHN of 23 with my Lee tester. They do ping if you drop them.
