I managed to get hold of a torque wrench today and measured the torque on the action bolts. I think I may have found my problem.
The bolts were barely snug. I could move them with around 5 inch lbs of torque. Research says that CZ recommends 25-30 inch lbs of torque with this rifle since it has metal bedding posts. I tightened it down to 25 inch lbs and will test it next chance I get. This may make all the difference in the world. The "loose" bolts would allow the action to move in the stock causing no end of inconsistency.
Now I am going to need to re-test all my ammo and see what it likes now.

Just watched a Youtube video put out by CZUSA about changing the stock on a 457. The guy in the video said to torque the bolts to 31 inch lbs.
I think I will start with 25 and then test 30 and see if it matters.
It will matter. There will be a torque setting between 20 and 30 inch pounds that will give you best accuracy. Its weird, but when I get my 455 right, the gun vibrates differently when shot.Originally Posted by tazman

That could just be the torque setting though. The light torque could have a dampening effect.
I don't know anything about ARA benchrest shooting, but that is a seriously nice rifle.

I don't know much about the sport yet either. At this point, I am trying to get my rifle and myself going as well as we can.
You know, I still have my high school target rifle, a Remington 540X. I haven't shot it in over 30 years, I could put a scope on it and benchrest it to see what it would do. Let's hope the rimfire ammo shortage doesn't get any worse.
Match grade ammunition is still available although it is expensive. People are not desperate enough yet to pay those prices for standard stuff.
I felt a little foolish a couple of years ago for buying enough 22lr ammo to last me for quite some time. Now, I don't feel that way at all.
Isn't it amazing that an ammo shortage can make a paranoid fool into a wise man?
I got back to the range today.
55 degrees and very light wind.
I checked to make sure the torque setting were where I left them at 20 inch pounds.
I tested some high dollar match ammo in the rifle. Lapua Xact, Lapua Midas+, and Eley Tennex. I also shot some of the Aguila match rifle.
The Tennex and Xact did the best. The Midas+ and the Aguila were both fairly close seconds.
I fired 25 rounds of each for score on an ARA factory class benchrest target. Bags front and back. Target at 50 yards.
The Aguila and the Midas+ scored 2250 out of 2500. The Lapua Xact scored 2350. The Eley Tennex scored 2400.
I was very happy with all of them.
Basically, I was putting all my rounds but one or two completely inside a 3/4 inch circle at 50 yards.

A tuner is your friend, I've used a Harrel tuner for over a decade now. Darn thing makes bad ammo look pretty impressive & turns good ammo into bug holes.
No tuners allowed in factory class as well as most other modifications and many accessories.
I stopped in a local shop I don't go in very often and the old guy had one of these in stock, first time I'd seen one in the flesh. Very nice rifle. I had kind of sworn off rimfires a few years ago due to ammo availability and not wanting to be held hostage by it.
Kindof a lot of money to drop on a new rifle for me, but I'm seriously tempted
Another shooter has one at the range where I shoot. Seeing how his shot was a good part of the reason I bought mine.
They do come with an accuracy guarantee. They have a 5 shot group that comes with them for proof that it will do it. As a side note, I can beat the group they sent fairly consistently when using Eley Tennex.
You wouldn't think a rifle like this would balance very well, but it does.
He had another very similar but with more of a sporter style stock, still had the heavy barrel. Sure would be a nice thing in your hands while watching for squirrels.
I may have to scrape together the bucks to get this rifle, if .22 LR ammo will stay available, it sure would be fun.
CZ makes several versions of their varmint style rifle. It has the heavy barrel and the stock configurations vary. They are significantly cheaper($200 cheaper) than the MTR.

It is much lighter than the MTR and seems to shoot just as well so far.
