Any way to remove the double stick tape before melting or do I have to put up with the smoke until I get it scrapped off the melted lead?

I just melt them. Removing it first would be a time wasting pita.
Melt in a pot with a lid. It will keep a lot of fumes contained. Then stand up wind and hold your breath.
Fumes are horrible on some things.

Hydrocarbons are a good flux ..... sorta
I just pick a time when the wind takes the nasty smoke the right direction and get'er done. As said, a lid helps in the early stages.

OK People. Enough of this idle chit-chat.

Back to your oars. The Captain wants to waterski.
I use a weed burner torch directed at the top of the melt. Burns off most of the nasty smoke. Don't over do it.
I did 10 lbs of them just this afternoon. Furst time I've had to melt some lead
A bath in acetone for a few hours will dissolve the glue. Extra step, but if you not want to put all that hydrocarbon garbage in the atmosphere, use acetone (or lacquer thinner)
I melted some of the stick on WW today and used a respirator and the was not as bad as the oil coated clip on WE that I melted!
I left the cover on the pot and waited a while to let the foam burn and scraped it off the top and that was the end of the smoke!
A couple more batches and I will be done!
Good info. I just bought some new tires and right in the parking lot of the tire dealer was a long strip of stick on weights. I appropriated the strip into my pocket.

I have finally finished my last pot of stick on wheel weights! I wish I had thought about the respiratory when doing the clip ons !
The stick ons were actually easier than the clip on because there was less trash to clean off of the top of the melt!
Now I have to haul all of the steel and zinc to the scrap yard and clean up my mess! We have cooler weather coming so I should be able to get it done quickly!
And then it is time to make some boolits!
I add something that will burn that takes care of the smoke and helps speed up the melt that is at the point when the smoking is starting.
Reloading to save money I am sure the saving is going to start soon
