My late 70s M700 had been a tack driver until something changed and it started stringing badly, horizontally, one year. Looked for the cause and the stock had warped, pressing against the side of the barrel. At that point you can either hog the barrel channel out massively,or replace the stock, nowadays I'd be tempted to look at laminated wood as at least it's wood still... Nice fiddleback on that stock, DG!

the barrel of my m700 mountain rifle(1990) was not what you call accurate, the best group was 2 1/2" at 100 yard(3 shots/bench). i gave it to my friend(gunsmith) to try and after about 2 months he said "get that thing away from me". he tried everything, "plastic" stock to the scope to 'glass bedding. he couldn't get under 2 1/2" at 100 yards. we tried different powders, bullets, primers, brass........all came to nothing. i sold it.

one of things i did was to check on the barrel channel. it was straight and true but remington did not seal/varnish/oil whatever the barrel channel or the rest of the inside stock. since that day, i always check the inside stock. i use tru-oil and a coat or two of johnsons paste wax to seal it.
