I own a few 700's and 40X variants. I have never lived in a state that would allow me to hunt with them, have never had the change to go to a state that I could hunt with them. All of mine are bench guns, including a 700 with a 4 digit serial number in the 2000's. I have owned other actions that were set up as bench guns, but never had the success that I had with 700's and 40X's. Bear in mind that the only thing Remington on these rifles are the trued actions. Years ago, I had a 700 varmint gun that was a documented 1 off from the factory. The barrel was very heavy and was not a standard twist. Remington tracked it to an assembly line workers hand built rifle. That rifle, equipped with a good trigger and optics would shoot with anything at the range at 100 yards. I finally shot the barrel out and fully converted it to a bench gun at that point.

In this day of 1500 dollar actions, I am sad to see them go away. I must admit that I have not had a new action in 20 years and that most of the actions I have are in the 40 to 50 year old range.

If I was limited to only one centerfire rifle; it would be a Remington 700. I base this on 5 decades of experience with many, many different rifles. I always had my dad's lever action in the background, but I became a bolt action guy before my voice changed and I had to start shaving. Remingtons were the most accurate, most reliable, and had the best trigger of the 1970s rifles that I could afford.

mine would be a semi custom 98 mauser in 7x57 that i and my gunsmith(mostly him) have built. i gave to my oldest son when he was 5 yo, but i was not "convinced" of that caliber. it took me quite a while to "convinced" myself of that caliber. i'll admit, it took me about 12 or 13 years and i don't know how many deer its killed, but i'm "convinced" now that a 7 mauser is the choice for deer. i wonder if my son will give it back?

Well I was hacking on him every time I sold one of my old rifles for several times what I had in them. The 700s were just used guns. Most would never be worth any premium. They were run of the mill, assembly line BA rifles. They were number one in sales only because Win went under in 1963. Well my buddy has passed and his boy has the most complete collection of Remington 700s, 1100s and 870s I’ve ever seen in one place. He may get last laugh on me if those Remington guns get quasi collector status. I’ve never been Remington fan of their guns after WW2.
my bdl 8 mag was bought new for 310 bucks. I could easily get over a grand for it today.

i agree. Even the news ones for the most part are shooters. Can you get a bad one? Sure you can but most of what i call bad 700s still shoot as well as my better 77s did. One of the best shooting rifles ive ever owned is a sps 24 inch 06 that i put in a cdl wood stock. It shoots as well as my heavy barreled varmint rifles have. Truthfully ive owned probably north of 20 700s through the years and have yet to have one that with load devolopement wont shoot moa. Only rem bolts ive owned that wouldnt were the 6.5 rem mag 600 i had and a stainless model 7 308 i still have. Both of them are good 1.5 inch guns and for the ranges there used at thats good enough for me. I think ive won the lottery when i get a 77 in my hands that shoots moa and a 1.5 inch one is a bragging gun. Savages shoot well too but there UGLY as are ruger americans, mossbergs and the cheaper rems and winchesters. Yup ive had some of them. Mostly to give to grandkids or were about given to me to begin with. I do have an american in 300 bo and its a shooter. To me theres ONLY TWO riflemans rifles. A 700 or a 70. Guys bash the post 64 70s too that dont have a clue. For the most part they hands down outshoot the pre 64s everyone brags on. But then most do more magazine reading then actual shooting. But IMO and i know what thats worth the nicest working man priced rifle in the world today is a model 70. Fit and finish and accuracy combined but they dont give them away. Best bang for the buck on a QUALITY gun today is a sps 700. Its like any thing else. Guys feel the need to bash the big dog. they think somehow that makes them look like there more gun savoy but real shooters know that there pounding sand.

I had a 700 ADL chambered in .243 that was a real tack driver. Was a safe queen for 20 years so traded it a couple months ago for a stainless CZ 75B. I still have a Model Seven in .308 that I will never let go. Too bad Remington got dismantled, always like their ammo too.

Both are dependable shooters and accurate.

Remington fan here, but I do have a few Savage bench guns. I did have two 77's that must have been early ones with the Douglas barrels, as both would go sub. 3/4" without much load work. Just sold the 25-06 and still have the 243. Tang safety guns, RS models

I saw that most of the workforce at Ilion, NY was laid off this week, with no firm date for the plant to reopen under the new management. The union workforce isn't happy, and have gotten Chuck Schumer involved. What could possibly go wrong?

Looks like the supply of new Remington rifles is going to be disrupted for at least a couple of months. A fellow might be tempted to let go of a few of his "rare, vintage, classic" Remingtons for a premium during the drought.

I have a 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag purchased new in 1977. It is the left hand model. I restocked it because I didn't like the design of the glossy late 70's BDL stock. It has been superb, sub MOA with Hornady 154 SP, and 162 BTSP in front of a case full of H4831. The trigger has been rock solid and adjusted down to a crisp 3 1/4 lbs. pull with zero creep or overtravel. Bad mouth the Remington trigger all you want it has been great. It is not getting changed out.

I owned a stock BDL Varmint Special from the early 70's in 222Rem. that was competitive in local bench rest competition bone stock with a 10X Weaver on it.

I have never seen a Winchester Model 70 that would shoot with a Remington 700. Period. There is a reason it was and is the basis of most accuracy rifle builds for 50 years.

Yes I own two Savage's both in 223 R. a Model 11L short action with sporter barrel and a Model110L long action with heavy stainless barrel. Only the heavy barrel Savage is sub MOA the sporter weight will go about 1 1/4".....and neither of them is finished comparable to the 700's.

I currently own 3 Remington HP rifles, the 700 and two 788's. None of them are for sale!!

Looking on the rack at the local fun store, the only sub-$600.00 rifle I see that is as nice (on average) as the 700 BDL is the Weatherby Vanguard. All the others in this price range are utilitarian matte finish/plastic stock rifles which I'm sure can shoot good but definitely not something you are going to display in the glass front cabinet in the living room.

round hill's Jeff Edwards told American rifleman that they plan on working with the unions to keep making 700's, 870's, 1100's, 1187's and 1911's.
he said they would not break up and sell off the company but work their tails off to make a good quality product to keep producing Remingtons licensing the Remington name with an agreement with vista outdoors.
time will tell and we will see what happens

That is exactly what they need to do. Get rid of all the stuff nobody cares about and stick to what they do best!

Some years back after I bought my Sendero in 308 I found a brand new take off barrel in the same style and caliber. I had plans at the time to cut the barrel back ans maybe lighten it up for a cadet martini and rechamber it to 32-20. What with all thats been happening with Remington might not be such a bad idea of taking a wait attitude and see how things will pan out. Lot cheaper doing a barrel same threads, bolt face cutout and caliber than starting with a new blank. I missed a stainless steel 40x barrel in 30-06 due to my not having the money. Heck I even have a spare Colt Trooper MKIII 357 barrel salted away. Frank

I've a Rem 700 Sendero in 308 and a 40X single shot in the same caliber. Even have a spare take off barrel for the Sendero and none of them will be going anywhere soon. I wouldn't hesitate to guess that when the firearms part of Remington gets back on their feet that there will likely be problems with the manufacture and possibly marketing of any new rifles much like what they experienced with Marlin.
