I was reading on another site that some of the parts that were owned by the group that owns Remington were auctioned and the new owners pending court approval were announced today. I can't remember all of it but IIR Ruger has the winning bid for Marlin firearms, the holding company that owns PSA got DPMS, H&R, AAC, Stormlake, and Parker, Sportsman's Warehouse got Tapco, Franklin Armory got Bushmaster, Sierra got Barnes Ammunition, Vista got the ammunition business, and and Roundhill LLC got the non Marlin firearms business. I have no idea what this means for the Remington brand. One person over there was speculating that Roundhill would sell the big green brand machinery and property and Remington would no longer exist. Does anyone here know???

My best buddy used to make fun of me for buying older used guns for the same money or more that I could buy a new Remington 700. I remember the day we stopped at LGS to pick up a new Rem 700 in 8mm mag. Shop had just taken in a 1895 Win 30/40 cal. I bought it at $25 more than my buddies new 700. Well I was hacking on him every time I sold one of my old rifles for several times what I had in them. The 700s were just used guns. Most would never be worth any premium. They were run of the mill, assembly line BA rifles. They were number one in sales only because Win went under in 1963. Well my buddy has passed and his boy has the most complete collection of Remington 700s, 1100s and 870s I’ve ever seen in one place. He may get last laugh on me if those Remington guns get quasi collector status. I’ve never been Remington fan of their guns after WW2.

No flies on a Remington 700 ADL or BDL up to year 2000, some perceived and real trigger issues over the years but easily remedied with a myriad of after market parts. The Remington 700 is the pattern of choice in precision bolt action rifles that has been copied over and over by more custom builders than any other. I ‘m glad I snagged a good pile of 700’s in long and short actions. I have had more Remington 700’s that are outstanding shooters than any other brand of rifle,not Winchester, Savage, or Ruger.

yup in all my years and over a 100 differnt guns ive only made money on one. that was a 3 inch 610 i picked up for a steal at 450 bucks and sold it two years later for 1200. Other then that ive lost money on every gun ive sold if you factor in cost of living. it allways made me chuckle when i was into having custom rugers made. people oohed and awed about collecting 3 screw rugers or even round top 77s and you could still buy them cheaper then a new one. A new blackhawk today is like 600 bucks! Try getting that for any old single action other then maybe a hawkeye or one of original two cylinder sets.

My 40x cost me $1100 with less than 300 rounds down the tube. This is a all stainless steel single shot with the laminated thumbhole stock. Last I looked was over 3 grand for the model I have. Wonder now that with Remington getting broken up wether or not someone will keep making the 40x and its variations. These are all made by the custom shop. Frank

Wouldn't it be great if they spun off the Remington Custom Shop to a separate Company - independent of the Harvard MBA's, focused on quality & accurate firearms?

Last really good Remington I bought was my 788 .243 carbine . Have owned a few 700's but never really was satisfied with them for one reason or another . I won't miss them as they existed but it would be great if they could get back to making them like they did pre 1970 . I'd like a new m25 carbine in 25-20 and a 14 carbine in 38-40 if they could figure out how to make them .

i owned several m700a, b & cdl, but i sold them. i used to own a m760 but that went to. the only remingtons(2 of them) i own is the m7 bought in the early '90s. one is fer me and the other is my youngest son's. they are both 7-08 and they are accurate. i'm talking 1/2 - 3/4" at 100 yards with 5 shots. i did a timney trigger to my sons gun but other than that, its all original. the 18.5" barrel is a joy to shoot. my friend has a m788 in 243 and he luvs it. my uncle has a m788 in 308 but he doesn't hunt anymore. my dad and my oldest son has m760 in '06 and they are shooters too. oh, i almost forgot, i have a rem m14 in 30 rem that is at my gunsmiths. it is a 1925 version and i "know" that it hasn't been cleaned since 1925!!!

i have gotten away from the remington brand. the m700s, while accurate, just wasn't fer me. i sold them at the turn of a century. the m760(308) was sold about 3 - 4 years ago. i luv older rifles, the mauser(91 - 98) and spr. armory(krag) are the best bet fer me. i luv old winchesters levers too, but i can't afford them.

My first CF rifle was a M700 HB Varmint in .222. Wish I had kept that rifle. Hard to believe that was over 50 years ago.

The 700 gained favor with customization because of the nature of its construction. Much easier to work on with everything designed in concentric rings , all tubular. Easy to square up and even easier to stock. This construction contributed to sales by keeping cost at reasonable level. The 700 is not a bad rifle, it’s just not anything special. When in business sold a lot of HB 700v in 22/250. The only bad 700s I got were the 280s right after they hit the market. There are a ton of 788 in this area. Most are 22/250s and 222 Rems. They were a good rifle for the money. I think I only sold about 5 40x Rems new in 20+ years.

I have a 770 30.06. I bought it early 2000's And its a tack driver. It came pre-sighted with a bushnell scope. The scope is still on zero. 4lb trigger pull. I have not done any mods. I also have a 760 in 30.06 it is a much better gun build wise though.

I bought a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 in the summer of 1962. I paid a whole $90.00 for it and was pleased with the accuracy (it would stay on a 1 inch target center at 100 yards) but I did not like the 20" barrel. Shooting prone with it would bring you a face full of dirt. Loud--I would reckon! I finally sold it to my boss at work for his son who loved it. I later bought a Model 700 in 30-06 produced by the Custom Shop at Remington from a guy who said "it was too pretty" to hunt with and I found out what he was talking about. I got it at a good price and passed it on the same way. I did not like "safe queens". I now have a Model 721 with its 24" barrel in 06 and it will be with me until I finally kick the bucket. I really like its simplicity and it handles very well. my experience anyway, james

I had that same rifle when I was about 18 or so and foolishly sold a few years later . I've never owned a more accurate rifle since 5 shots in a ragged hole was common with Sierra flat base match bullets .
My family has always been Remington fans and honestly between all of us never had one that wouldn't shoot well .

I had a 721 with Lyman receiver sight that was my truck gun for years. It was 30/06 and handled like it floated. I killed a lot of critters with in, my boy cried till I let him have it. He has 3x9 on it and he had to have it D&Ted. The only Rem bolt I have know is 722.

Yeah, it would be nice if they spun off the custom shop and made it a separate business. But don't think they're prices would come down. When I lived on long island Ny Chester's always had a good selection of both new and used 40x's in different flavors. Bought it from Bob White who advertised in Shooters Corner. It's supposed to be in 308 but barrel is stamped 7.62 Nato. Never could figure that one out. Frank

ive owned at least 20 700s through the years and have 6 right now. In all those years ive never owned a 700 that wouldnt shoot moa with loads it like and YUP im even including the newer ones. Matter of fact ive got a matte blued sps barreled action dropped into a cdl wood stock with no bedding that shoots 150 interlocks into 3/4s of an inch for an average of 3 5 shot groups. Most of them werent quite that good but like i said with some load developement ive yet to have one i couldnt get moa out of. Winchesters and savage are close but ive had bad examples of both of them. Ruger? Isnt even in the running. Pre hawkeye tang saftey guns were about a joke. Hawkeyes improved to where maybe 50 percent of them were moa. Ive probably had better luck with #1s then 77s and for sure a cheap american will about always outshoot a 77. But i doubt the military would arms its snipers with second best. There good reason other then some early 70s about allways used 700s. At least up to today when many are armed with for the most part custom rifles. But there still issuing 700s. Good reason too why in production class bench rest comp 700s have dominated the game there too and even in full on custom bench rest rifles most through the years were based on 700s.

The Remington 700 was always a quality rifle and great shooter at least pre-Freedom Group.
