Anyone shoot long range with cast ?

Just curious if anyone did long range shooting (say 400+) with cast boolits. If so what do you shoot as far as caliber bullet powder lube and target?

Just for fun, sure. Either before or after the crops come out of the the field, I'll set targets out as far as 600 yards. It sure is fun shooting handguns, and you can easily see where you hit. I like steel targets which offer somewhat of a reaction, although you can rarely hear them from that far away.

yes, 38-55, 45-70, various 11mm's, sillywets or paper, lube is generally 50/50 beeswax/crisco. Bullets and powder you need to maybe narrow your question a bit. lot a long rang shooters here.

Every Friday at our private 800 yd range ,all day affair with barbecue served around 11:30 after the smoke clears ( I shoot a custom built TC 45 Renegade ) .Everyone else shoots centerfire so I practice social distancing around them My load is always a .443/530 gr / elliptical paper patched over a felt wad and 80-90 grains of OE 2F or 3F still trying to find (the load) My 32 in GM barrel is a Bob Hoyt relined 45 /1-18 twist and it"s a long day 55-70 boolits down range and then home for cleaning (me and the gun) Ed

I have shot 45-90 550, 45-70 535, 40-65 400 and 38-55 360 086 60 out to 500 yds at local silhouette matches.At 500 yds that 550 really rings and makes them jump. The 360 is more a tink but still enough wiggle to see.

The big thing with cast at long range is knowing the trajectory and reading wind. Cast good bullets, a good load and have fun. That 550 at 1150-1200 fps is about 1 second from trigger pull to target

.308 210gn bullet (powder coated) at about 1900fps out to 600yd, a bit less than 2MOA. At 300yd and closer I get 1.5MOA almost every group. Quite a few are less than 1MOA. Every now and then I get a flier, probably a bad bullet that I didn't catch in my inspections.

I am working with the 165gn XCB now, but, I don't think I can push it hard enough to get to 600yd (10" twist). It shows some real promise out to 300 or 400yd.

Lots of others do better. For me it is all about the quality of the cast bullet and how it fits your barrel (throat and rifling). And, yes, reading the wind is key to hitting the 10 ring.

Absolutely!
I shoot at a range that has targets that go out to 880 yards.

I cast for most of my guns and a few of them will get out that far. But yeah, gettting lead out accurately to 1000 yards is about getting a good hard alloy, gas checking it and lube / coating it. AND one super important part is to keep the RPM in an appropriate range.

I cast a few different boolits in 30 cal for my AR10 308 and struggled to get 2 MOA with full power rounds. But back it up and I can get sub MOA. I cannot get 2500 fps sub MOA, however because the twist is 1:10...

I recently bought a 350 Legend upper with a twist of 1:16. I am able to get 125 grain GC boolits sub MOA at 2650 fps.

So, YES! You can shoot long range, you just have to figure out your stuff...

Funny enough - at my range, one of the ROs put 3 shots in a row on the 675 yard target (3'x3' square) with a Glock 17...

Most of those bpcr guys will take a sharps/highwall/martini henry and shoot out to 1000 yds and further if im goin for long range which is rare ill take a lyman postell over black using crisco/bw this load is probably one of the most accurate loads im aware of

30-06, 1:15 twist, RCBS 165 sil will hold 1.5 moa or less at full pressure with H4350 out to 850 on our range shooting the hanging steel. The slow twist is the key.

FWIW, if you want to shoot long range with cast then I suggest you follow the path of Gibson and others. Have a barrel made with a slower twist so you can shoot at higher velocities and a chamber throat that fits the bullets you choose to use.

While large bore rifles can shoot to long range I found the recoil to be tiring. 10 shots and I was done for the day. The low velocities made MOA groups very tough to get.

I shoot 400yds and 12" plates with 44, 45, and 500 pistols. Its pretty addictive

only shoot to 200 yards with my 308 and 357 mag lead loads .once you work out the drop they group well .our range is max 200yards
