Picked up a Savage Sporter over the weekend. I think it is a late production Model 23A based on the serial number. Just wondering if this checkering is original. Looked on the net but couldn't find any like it (or the pics were not detailed enough). Rifle is complete other than the missing sights and the forearm is not checkered. Thanks for your help.

The factory didn't checker the 23s. The fleur-de-lis checkering was a very popular custom style. Nice job, too.

Thanks guys. I was hoping it was some sort of DeLuxe version, but I'm happy with it anyway. Looked at a bunch of pics of 23A's on line and several were checkered, but none in this pattern. I guess one of the PO's really liked the rifle as well.
