    On fitting a Climin' Lyman

I finally broke down and bought a Providence tool copy of the Lyman 21 for my Japchester 1895. I fitted it this weekend and had to do some mods as it was not a slap on fit.

First off the hole for the take down pin was not standard thread for the old Winchesters so I had to re-tap it with the supplied tap. I used a tool I made fron an old v block to ensure the thread was straight. I then put the sight on for a try and found that as shipped the sight would need the rear or adjustment stud drilled and tapped about 1/2 into the threaded hole on the receiver that is set up for a Williams peep. I found that by enlarging the front mount hole by about 10 thousands I was able to use the rear hole already in the receiver. I did however have to re-drill it and re-tap the hole to 11-36 Winchester thread.

The next problem was that my gun had a saddle ring cemented into the receiver and I did not want to have either a hole or a plug. My solution to this was to mill a 1/4 inch notch in the bottom of the sight base so the sight would drop down and still clear the saddle ring. I then trimmed a 2/4 off the locking lever for the sight adjustment and while i was there I checkered it 30 lpi. By gently honing the back of the lever I got it to sit pointed straight back when locked.

The last step was to take the supplied super small peep and drill and tap it out to 10-32 to take standard sight disks or to use as a ghost ring. Not the sight looks right and works right and I don't have any extra holes in the receiver.

I did take pictures if anyone else needs to do this.

As to overall quality the sight is just all right, I was disappointed that they charge extra(33 bucks) for a decent rear peep. as supplied the sight is worthless fo any but young eyes and would be totally worthless for hunting near dusk.

Holy Cow!!! I took what I believe is the same sight and installed it in around an hour (including using the supplied tap) and didn't have to mess with it anymore. I did enlarge the aperture later though.

Wow the few that I bought I thought the peep sight was huge! I plan to thread it just so I can get a finer peep insert. Of course... I've had the gun and sights for a few years now and still havent installed them

I bought a Providence copy of the Lyman 21 to replace the original that some genius replaced with a set of cheap express sights on my original 95 in 405. I wasn't favorably impressed with the Providence copy. The actual peep portion that you adjust for windage is so loose that it will cant/twist in the slot. I may make a new part to replace it but, for the price, one shouldn't have to make repairs or replacement parts.

This is an assumption - do y'all have an original Lyman 21, 26, or 38? These all have a little play in them. I'm happy to post some pictures of original - installed - by - Winchester examples. Both well used and as applied. I think this discussion may be a little bit of over expectation - and I mean zero offense if anyone has an original and feels the Providence replica is inferior.

I had a 95 in 30-06 that had an original Lyman 21 on it and the fit and finish was very good. The copy I received from Providence wasn't as well made or finished. Now it is possible that I had the one and only well made/finished original and the one and only less well made/finished copy from Providence but, for the price, $160.00 IIRC, I wasn't favorably impressed with the quality of the Providence. Granted an original Lyman would cost more but I still feel the quality of the Providence was low for the price charged.

A Win. 95 or copy just doesn't look right without the Climin' Lyman. Oh, and I've had no problem with my Providence tool copy.
