I finally broke down and bought a Providence tool copy of the Lyman 21 for my Japchester 1895. I fitted it this weekend and had to do some mods as it was not a slap on fit.
First off the hole for the take down pin was not standard thread for the old Winchesters so I had to re-tap it with the supplied tap. I used a tool I made fron an old v block to ensure the thread was straight. I then put the sight on for a try and found that as shipped the sight would need the rear or adjustment stud drilled and tapped about 1/2 into the threaded hole on the receiver that is set up for a Williams peep. I found that by enlarging the front mount hole by about 10 thousands I was able to use the rear hole already in the receiver. I did however have to re-drill it and re-tap the hole to 11-36 Winchester thread.
The next problem was that my gun had a saddle ring cemented into the receiver and I did not want to have either a hole or a plug. My solution to this was to mill a 1/4 inch notch in the bottom of the sight base so the sight would drop down and still clear the saddle ring. I then trimmed a 2/4 off the locking lever for the sight adjustment and while i was there I checkered it 30 lpi. By gently honing the back of the lever I got it to sit pointed straight back when locked.
The last step was to take the supplied super small peep and drill and tap it out to 10-32 to take standard sight disks or to use as a ghost ring. Not the sight looks right and works right and I don't have any extra holes in the receiver.
I did take pictures if anyone else needs to do this.
As to overall quality the sight is just all right, I was disappointed that they charge extra(33 bucks) for a decent rear peep. as supplied the sight is worthless fo any but young eyes and would be totally worthless for hunting near dusk.
