    Learned Something New

I grew up shooting a Daisy bb-gun. From there, i graduated up to a single shot 20 gauge and then a Ruger 10/22. I havent returned to air rifles until about 30 years later. 5 years or so ago, i bought a Beeman Silver Kodiakx2.

This purchase was to serve a purpose for when ammo was scarce. I bought several tins of various bulk pellets also. After several failures to get good groups, i stashed it in the back of my safe.

Recently I learned that some air rifles have a thousand break in period. After reading the owners manual, I saw that mine was one of those.

So, armed with some pellets, i shot the heck out of that rifle. Wouldnt you know it...after almost s thousand rounds, i am getting impressive groups.

I wonder if fire lapping would of sped up the process

    There's no "fire."

Just learning how to hold the gun on a Rest is a big part of it. Read up on the "Artillery Hold" somewhere in this forum. Makes all the difference in the world.

"fire lapping", when applied to airguns, means to coat the pellet in abrasive and then fire it.... It is a pretty aggressive approach, usually not necessary, but does not only apply to powderburners....

More than likely, after 1000 rounds, everything in the gun just settled in, and in addition you got better shooting it....

I bought a Crossman nitro piston 22 cal pellet gun from a guy for $50. He said it wouldn't shoot. He had only shot it less than 50 times.
Took over 300 shots for it to break in. Now ir shoots pretty good.

Like rimfires, most air rifles seem to be very ammo sensitive.

Unfortunately one can end up with lots of tins of pellets in the quest.

My recent chinese P-17 purchase prefers some old Daisy "match" pellets that I just happen to have a few thousand of.
Nothing else that I have will shoot them so it is great news.

    Firelaping = New Barrel!!!

The break in is so parts lap them selves together, just like paying a gunsmith to do a action job on a revolver.
Springs will take a "set" and become smoother, trigger parts will fit better and releases will be smoother.

    Just shoot it.
Remember firelaping is a gunsmiths friend, makes them a lots of money doing re barrel jobs.

Thats more than likely because someone decided to use valve grinding compound instead of a polishing compound

The NECO fire lapping kit has 220, 400, 800, and 1200 grits.
Not one of them polishing compound!!!

If i have to fire lap id use a polishing compound the idea is not to scratch up the bore it may take a few more rounds to achieve what im going for but running 220 grit down my bore would definitely get someones head removed from there shoulders. Just saying

I would use JB Bore Paste. It's a non embedding paste that works good.

Remember that air rifle barrels are choke bored, and any sort of abrasive lapping
    will remove that choke boring.

Some have a choke, others not.... you would have to ask Crosman about that one....
