    Dog days be gone!

Saturday is one of the highlights of my year, the first day of dove season! Nice sunflower field with sons, grandson and friends. My boys and grandson and I are all shooting my reloads, 20 for me and 12 for them. 7/8 oz 8 1/2 shot @ 1300 fps out of IC for me, 1 1/8 oz #8 at 1200 IC for them. Temp supposed to moderate from recent wet broil we've been on for last week. Cleaned up the last frozen ones in July and smoked doves are all our favorites. Thank the Lord for another season, my 50th behind the gun.

Best of luck to you and yours, Hal, I hope you shoot a bushel of 'em!

Nice arithmetic, that's 57 years behind the gun. Don't worry, I'm not running for president. 😜

It's a very small bird that can twist and turn and fly faster than anything you've ever seen. Think of a bat, except really fast! If you're going after them bring lots of ammo!

Not only plenty of ammo, but a mount for your shotgun rigged to a good radar unit. With a decent tail wind they can be doing as much as 60mph when they go by.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

They were zipping and diving pretty good yesterday on a nice NE breeze but we did manage to kill about a bushel. 10 or 12 got by me that I just couldn't get on without firing a shot. Another 10 or 12 embarrased me with clean misses! When I centered 'em that 20 ga load balled 'em up though.

Yup, same with me except I spent the night in my Dodge Caravan and I barely got out the next morning. It's a mile into camp on a dirt road.

Marko: a Dove is like a Small Pigeon.

I haven't got to go Dove Hunting in years. Everything except Public Land is closed tight out here, and the Doves all go to farms cuz that's where the food is. I could probably get my limit with my pellet gun in my Front Yard, but my wife won't let me shoot them cuz she feeds them. They'd probably taste like Sunflower Seeds!

There is a breast on each one that is essentially 2-4 bites of the richest dark red meat there is. Similar to Fillet Mignon. Band Tail Pigeons usually fly with the doves and just look about half again bigger. Problem is they aren't in season for another month or so and if F&G catches you with them, it's a fine. This is why you want to hunt a orchard, plenty of places to stash wrong birds. after they are debreasted you can't tell the difference except the Pigeons are bigger.

You wrap them in Bacon and cook them very slow and keep them slathered in butter with seasoning in it.

Pretty good eats, and the average guy can eat 5-10 of them in one sitting.

It is too cold in AK for Doves, and in fact, it is too cold for them here right now. It was 112,114,116F this last weekend and they were here. It is 68F right now and they gone and have all flown South to get in the warmer weather of the Desert.

This happens the same way every year, except sometimes it cools off before Labor Day and the Doves are gone, and nobody gets anything. Ours all come down from Bakersfield CA and end up in El Centro down by Palm Springs.

The Ranch Families all used to bait their fields and Avocado Orchards to attract them, but most of them have gotten caught and it is a $5000 fine for doing it. Now they just plant Milo around the edges of the fields and have the kids go around and knock all the seeds off a few days before the season starts. They don't have too many guests anymore as there hasn't been that many birds for the last few years.

I miss it, it was a good hunt and when 12 guys all have their limits by 7:00 AM it means there were plenty of birds to shoot at. Not so much any more, Probably Global Warming or Trump or something?
