    Top Punch Reference

SingleShotBuff has graciously compiled a top-punch reference for the Lyman moulds and I have added it to castpics under the moulds section. If you dont see the link at first, clear your cache. The flash menus tend not to update until you do.

    A big thanks to SSB

Thanks, wiljen. I have written what numbers I could on the Lyman and RCBS illustrations in an old Midway Master Casting Catalog, but SSB's list on CASTPICS will be easier to use. If we could only get Balllisticast, Lee, NEI, and Saeco to use the same numbers........

    Gents,

Anyone with additional information, particularly on older top punches, please PM or e-mail the info to me so I can expand the chart.

    Thanks

    singleshotbuff:

I compiled a similar list from the various Lyman / Ideal Handbooks and catalogs in my files, including the seating screw numbers, which are not always the same. Can't e-mail it, as it was on an old hp PC and didn't get transferred to my mac, but I can send you a hard copy (sorted three ways - by mould number, by top punch and by seating screw) if you will PM me your s-mail address.

If you guys check the Lyman moulds charts on castpics, the TP is listed for the particular mould./beagle

    Will do floodgate.

beagle, this chart is just intended as a sort of "reverse look up" to match a top punch to a mold/molds. I will be using the info on castpics to expand the top punch chart, thanks for pointing it out to me. I guess I hadn't noticed that part of the mold list.

    Thanks

With all the centuries of knowledge collected here is there any way of cross referencing Lee, Lyman R C B S, Saeco and others for the inter change of top punches? BWB

    Top Punch for Lee 452-255RF

Are top punches for the Lyman sizer-lubricator available for Lee boollets?

Could these be made from aluminum or brass?

    Open to suggestions

If memory serves, the Lyman 424 Top punch fits the 452-255RF

Thanks for the great reference chart. I always have to go back through my lyman or rcbs catalog and figure out what I need. This will be a good help.

When I had a 450 I couldn't afford extra top punches (really) so I used the same one for everything. You know what? It worked.

I have a top punch with the number 297 on it and can not find it on any of the charts. Anyone know what mold it is good for?

    stringstretcher:

Most likely for the #321297 181-gr. FN GC for the .32 Spl., though TP # 295 for the .32-40 #319295 is the one usually listed for it. These top punches acually have quite a bit of interchangeability, especially in view of Lyman's rather "poetic" (to use Al's term) approach to nose profiles from cherry to cherry.

Sizing boolits from the RCBS 150KT SWC mould this week, I noticed that the official genuine RCBS #429 top punch, as recommended by RCBS, puts a nice little radius around the meplat of the boolit. If those guys don't get it quite right with their factory recommendations, they don't have a lot of room to talk about our homemade punches or using the "wrong" punch.

I cast .25 bullets with an OLD Ideal mold #25720. And I size on a SAECO lub/sizer. I can't find a flat top punch. I'm using the same pointed top punch that fits my old Ideal 25719 mold. I'm slightly damaging my flat nose bullets. Any suggestions? Thanks. I'm a newbie here but not that newbie at casting. Terry Morgan aka Milt Farrow
