    Split pea soup ?

    I was sitting here trying to figure out what I wanted for lunch
    And realized I haven't had split pea soup for a long long time .

    Anyone have a favourite recipe ?

    I am the only person in the house that will eat it and I love it. Just open a can from time to time, would love a good homemade one.

    I love it.
    We have a bone-in ham at Xmas & Easter. THE BONE IS MINE !!!!!
    Boil it, clean off the meat. Add peas, a bit of carrot, spices and cook down to smooth.
    Freezes well.

    Gotta go out to the garage and check freezer. Might still be some out there, lunch time is coming up.

    Love it too. Grew up with no salt added in food so salty hams, etc ruin it when someone adds even more salt. Hate onions too. Trying to remember a canned one that was actually pretty good. Had a slight smokey taste.

    I do that with all the different variations of lentils, green lentils, brown, yellow, and split peas. Cooking time on split peas & lentils is same so all the different colors looks attractive,
    Add onion, meat of choice, (ham, keilbasa sausage), and a some basil.
    Basil is good with any types of bean soup,
    Onion, use half your onion at the beginning, other half when almost done
    salt & pepper to suit

    You can't eat split pea soup in the summer. It is for winter.
    Every time we get a ham, we eat half of it, the rest goes into the split pea soup.

    My ham bones and ends all get used for ham and beans, I can eat myself sick on those. Oh, only salt cured hams are allowed in our house.

    8 Cups of Water or 1/2 of that chicken broth
    Carrots
    Celery
    WHOLE onion
    Garlic
    Bay leaves
    Spilt peas - 16oz
    1+ pound of ham - I do cube it and soak a little to get rid of excess salt (if already too salty). And I usually buy a ham steak...don’t usually buy hams.

    Sauté onion and then add the Carrots. Then the rest for about an hour plus.

    Costco Sourdough Wheat - sliced - oven baked with Parmesan and buttered - with a slight sprinkle of garlic salt.

    In my opinion the secret to a GREAT pea soup is the ham. Every year the wife and I order a bone-in smoked ham from Nueskes in northern WI, usually around the holidays. It's definitely the best ham I've found, but a little pricey to make a habit of. Anyway, the pea soup from the bone is something I look forward to every year. I don't need to look in the freezer, I finished it off a long time ago. I've tried curing and smoking a fresh ham but haven't gotten to Nueske's flavor yet.

    Cajun Split Pea Soup ( My Mom's)

    1- 1 pound pkg. Camellia Brand Green Split Peas (No Substitution allowed)
    1/4 lb. Smoked Seasoning Ham or Pickled Pork
    1 link of Andouille Sausage is optional , sliced and quartered .
    6 to 8 cups water or chicken stock
    1 large onion chopped
    1 green bell pepper , chopped
    2 stalks celery , tops and bottom , chopped
    4 carrots , chopped fine
    2 cloves fresh garlic , minced
    1 large Bay Leaf
    Salt and Tony's seasoning to taste .

    1.) Rinse and sort the peas.

    2.) Cover peas with water , add meat , vegetables and seasonings . Simmer 2 to 2 1/2 hours .
    Stir and add water as needed to desired consistency .

    3.) Remove bay leaf . Pass through sieve or blender for smoother consistency ... Optional - Note , We usually ate it lumpy.
    Adjust seasonings to taste .

    You wanted a proper recipe ... here it is ...

    I'm going to try the Cajun ... It has my tummy rumbling .
    I prefer it lumpy myself .

    Split pea soup was always a winner while being out in the cold as a soldier.
    Most of the tanks are gone and the windows don't rattle anymore. I won't be able to sleep now.

    One of my daughters swore off split pea soup. My wife cooked up a batch she doctored up with food coloring, well beet juice. My daughter had 3 helpings before we broke the news, and we all had a good laugh. I like pea soup b also cook them in other dishes like vegetable soup/stew which usually includes a hodge podge of various veggies. Sometimes I might add chicken, ham, turkey or whatever I have after stripping the carcass, sometimes some egg noodles. Season to taste and enjoy.

    I can still remember mom always having a pot simmering on a wood stove on the farm. The folks had a wood fire going for heat for years and that old range/stove was a find at an auction. I can remember a cast iron kettle for water and cast iron stew pot on that old stove for years.

    The old farm house had a huge kitchen and we had a picnic table and bench seat in the kitchen for many years. Dad found an old table at an auction and he refinished it nicely. The folks are early 80s now, and moved to town a few years ago. They still own the 10 acre farm and it's leased to a nice family. Mom now makes her vegetable soup/stew and puts the pot in the fridge. It takes no time at all to ladle a bowl and zap it in the microwave, but I still miss the pot simmering on the stove years ago.

    Come to think of it, mom hasn't made just split pea soup for 50 some years. My brother crashed on his bike when he was 7, and spent some time in the hospital. My brother ate so much pea soup while his jaw was wired shut that he lost a taste for pea soup, hence making vegetable soup/stew ever since.

    My wife and I love split pea soup. I think every bag of split peas has a recipe for soup on it. I like a recipe that calls for thyme and then we add a meaty, leftover ham bone. Sometimes we make it without the ham. Found some ham hocks marked down at the grocery store and they gave the soup great smoky flavor, just not as meaty. We always used green peas but another store was clearing out yellow peas and they were good, not as sweet as the green.

    I think split pea soup is one of the few foods that are better from the can.I love the Campbell's condensed in the small cans far more than the Progresso non condensed. We have bought the dry split peas in the bags,and while good they just never turn out great..I actually prefer lentils over dry split peas.

    A bag of split peas, 4 smoked hamhocks, onion if desired. Add 1-2 carrots. Put in crockpot on low for 8-10 hours and add water as needed. Todd

    Don't know how You would make Split Pea Soup WITHOUT a Hambone or ham hocks.
    Where would the flavor come from.

    I have none left in freezer. It'll be at least mid October before I can gets my hands on another bone-in half ham.
