Remington Model 12

Have a Remington model 12, s/l/lr 22cal, octagon barrel.
Not sure how old it is.
It does not have any model number on it.
Did the early models not have a model number?????
Could it be some place else????

Look for a 2 character alpha code on the left side of the barrel a half inch in front of the action. That code is the month and year of manufacture. If the code is not there then the M12 is before 1921 when the coding started. I will post a link to the codes. I see a code of L for 1920 but only on some lists. You will be interested in the dates prior to 1935 or so prior the the 121 replacing the 12. There was frequently no model number, they only made one 22 pump, so was considered unnecessary I suppose. I have a M17 from 1921 with no model number, or much else but a choke.serial, patent and Manufacturer’s address. I have never owned a 12 but my 1927 M17 and M25 are marked with a model ## on the left frame side. On the 17 they added it between 21 and 27, could assume the same on the M12 unless better info fourth coming. The date code is when it was assembled, best data.

Model 12 ...That I replaced with an octagonal Numrich barrel instead of relining original. Extra weight provides an excellent offhand shooter

I thought that the 12C has a semi pistol grip buttstock with crescent buttplate. Perhaps an option. We have a m17 20 gauge ( neatest pump ever) but I need a m12C for a bucket list rifle.

Most accurate rimfire I ever owned was a round barreled model 12. It helps if you're a teenager with 20/15 vision.

Yours looks a lot like mine, pretty much identical. I got mine some years ago for $25 from a guy settling a family estate. Nobody wanted it because the stock was broken and it was so rusty you could barely tell what it was. It took a lot of elbow grease to clean it up. I researched it at the time, and found that they were made beginning in 1909, but it wasn't called the Model 12 until 1912, and based on serial number and patent dates, mine was made before that.

Mine is serial# 67***, last patent date 1909. It also has the 24" octagon barrel.

There must be books out there that list date by serial number, but I don't have them. I did find reference online to a serial# 341*** being made in 1915, so if that's correct, it would narrow yours down to between 1912 and 1915.

Added: I found another post online, in reference to an early Model 12 Remington:
"Date of manufacture is 1913. Serial Number: 222632. "
