    herco in 9mm

I came across a note I had written in one of my reloading books on the 9mm parabellum page
    115 gr. 6.5gr herco 1.09" col

after reading what Mr Gibson came up with on the overpressure book loads with old green dot data I'm wondering how safe this old load data is for herco

I use 6.2 grains of herco with the lee 358-125-RF sized .357 in 9mm. I have shot thousands of them with no problems.

There is no difference between communism and socialism, except in the means of achieving the same ultimate end: communism proposes to enslave men by force, socialism—by vote. It is merely the difference between murder and suicide. Ayn Rand

That is a top end 9mm load and ok but I suggest working up to it in your pistol. I use 7.0 gr Herco under a 115 gr Gold Dot for a +P load in my CZ75. Runs 1350 fps. I got the load back in '89 from a "Taffin Tests" article in the Handloader magazine. I don't shoot many of them, just enough to ensure reliable function and expansion. Also use this load with the Hornady 115 XTP HP bullet. Both very accurate and dependable. I save them for potential serious social encounters. I have since pressure tested the load and it is right up at the top end of SAAMI +P psi MAP (38,500 PSI).

I had good results with Herco in 9mm pistols using a variety of cast bullets, but it's been a long time ago. Most, maybe all of the loads were with lighter bullets in the 110-125 grain range. I've since gone to a 150 grain round nose for all 9mm loads and don't recall trying Herco with that bullet. Herco is a good powder for many handgun cartridges, but it's seldom mentioned these days.

I had loaded some 9mm with Herco data in the 90's. I shot 2 through the Chronograph and the rest through a Blackhawk. My suggested data was 100 fps higher than what was listed for jacketed. I did scrub a little lead but nothing heavy.

    Howdy gents,

I've been running 5.4 grains of Herco under the Lee .358-125-RF, tumble-lubed and sized .3575," in my Kahr 3-inch-barrelled pocket pistol.

It shoots decently and averages 998 f.p.s. over the chronograph.

    Happy trails,

Kind of an older thread, but I have an 8lb keg of Herco left from my shotgunning days. Next week I'm getting a Sig P365 XL (my first 9mm) and it should be fun working up some loads with this gun. I figure to use Green Dot (I have an 8 pounder of this too) for standard loads and Herco for higher velocity stuff. I'd like to get 1400 fps plus out of the LEE 95 grn RNFP. We'll see how it goes. Might be interesting to zap a close range pig or deer with the little gun.

Herco works great for 22 mag level loads in my Hornet too. 5 grains give me 2200 fps with the 37 grain NOE flatpoint and sub moa accuracy. I can tell you the groundhogs don't like it!
