questions about the Lyman 525 slug

I have been reloading pistol and rifle for years and am now getting into shotgun reloading. I have a Lyman 525 slug mold that I thought I would use... My slugs are coming out between 678 and 680 in size and between 489 to 491 in weight.

My alloy is WW with 2% pewter added, Should I add in more pure lead to up the weight and downsize the diameter? Do you shoot at this size or does someone make a sizing die for shotgun slugs?

    Any help would be appreciated...

The barrel will size it when fired & use a shot cup without ribs inside of the cup . I try to use a softer alloy , but I shoot a lot at 11-1300 FPS .

sometimes it helps to fill the base void with hot glue to keep the skirt from being deformed upon firing

Soft lead increases accuracy in my gun (rifled 870) considerably. Tested, not opinion. Fill the base of the slug with hot glue, load in a straight wall 2 3/4" hull over 36 gr Longshot. 3" groups at 100 yds.

Greetings HogTamer, did you ever try darker nitro card in wad below the slug and what wad are you using in the above mentioned load of 36 gr Longshot.
Is your barrel pinned to the receiver?
You are doing very well with your load and gun.

Greetings Aj! I found that hot glue in the base works better than the hard card and the slug fits flat against the base of the wad. The widest part of the slug that engages the rifling sits flush with the top of the wad. The trap commander wad works well in the straight wall hulls. Book load is 39 gr longshot. Here's a thread with load info except I now use 36 gr and once fired fed gold medal hulls. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...er%2C+longshot

I don’t put anything in my bases of the slug and get pretty good accuracy with Herco.

Maybe it’s needed for slower burning powders?

    Here’s 50 yards.

My favorite 12 gage load is charged with Herco as well under the slug - without a wad blow out .
But a few days ago I tried some 20 gage Lyman slugs a member sent me with a reasonably mild charge of Unique that blows the wads .
